If you have the time and money, make it a salt water reef aquarium.
You can put some Nemo's in it ![]() |

If I were setting up an aquarium from scratch, I'd go with the aquatic frogs. They swim up to the top of the water, then spread eagle, and float down to the bottom like little parachutes. Very entertaining.
Then put crawfish in the bottom. They'll walk around waving their claws, trying to pinch a leg off... ![]() |

I would recommend ciclids. They have a large variety of them from Africans which tend to be more colorful (blue etc.) to the American ones. We have a ciclid tank and we have a number of convicts that keep us constantly amused because they are always breeding. The breeding is the exciting part watching them flirt, then picking out their spot, laying the eggs, tending them...then watching they hatch and grow. Convicts are unusual in that they stay with their young. They guard them, swish up things from the bottom to feed them etc. They even put the babies to 'bed" at night. The mom and dad suck them up in their mouth and then put them in a little nook or corner and pile them on top of each other where they stay for the night. The parents then let them go free swimming in a small area they guard during the day.
Cilcids are semi-aggressive so you can't have your normal fish such as neons and such in the tank...they will kill them. When you add a new chilid you have to rearrange the stuff in the tank to get rid of the territories or someone is gonna die. The Green Terror is a bad ass fish that gets to be a good size and is constantly hungry....the convicts, green terrors etc. will eat feeder fish you put into the tank. They eat chilid food and love frozen bloodworms as a treat. |

40g and 50g?
hehehe, I am setting up a 315g full reef display... with total water volume in the area of 550-600g. If you are into predators, try a mantis shrimp... those things are wicked. I have two in tanks on my desk. Bastards go crazy on hermit crabs and snails ![]() |

Not true, in a 40 gallon take you can only have a max 2-3 gold fish if you want them to stay healthy for a long time. |

I'm buying an 80 gallon hexagon, getting a killer deal on it. I want to put some nice salt water fish in it. Now I just need a house to keep the tank in, I don't think this apartment is big enough

Its on a concrete floor in my basement.
The stand is built from 4x4 and 2x6's with a 1" sheet of plywood for a top. There will actually be 3, possibly 4 tanks hooked into this system in total. 315G display (7'x3'x2') 160ishg equipment tank 90g water change tank 90g algae filter yes, I can spell addiction... |
