MR2, is a big fan of 2A guys :), looks tight dude, but i think that style is overused, and im not trying to fuck up your entry or anything cos it is outstanding... but that 2A type of style is just overused.

Well I figured since everyone else put it in flash I thought I'd give it a try too ;)

My FLASH VERSION (29 KB)

(The first 3 links at the top are buttons, didn't have enough time to finish the rest. Other looping transitional effects such as the guy being replaced by other suitable content would go well. oh ya, and design could stretch with some work.)

Looks very nice galleryseek, but about the 3 buttons: when I rollover it disappears instead of highlighting a sub menu item..or do you know about this and is this part of your time issue?

Very nice work, but the dude's head is cut off on the top, you should (in my opinion though) show at least the eyes...or maybe make the pic smaller and try to display the whole face?

Just some input from a fellow designer :winkwink:

Good point. I chose that as the main photo because i wanted something very close up and detailed (the photo itself was also cut off there).

I think this'll be a learning experience for a lot of designers here. most designers who entered the contest do all primarily adult designs... fortunately i have a stronger mainstream background than my adult background.

but one thing I learned when i started out, was when it comes to good mainstream design technique, it's best to stay away from the use of a lot of gradients, a lot of curves, shadows, etc etc... all of that stuff is great with adult design because the intent is to be glamourish, but mainstream design is more about textual content, therefore a design that isn't cluttered with a lot of 3d, bevels, shadows n' such everywhere, makes it easier for the visitor to visually access that content - and also makes the page load quicker.

Also... a GREAT way to develop better mainstream technique is to take a look at some of the bigger mainstream sites and get a feel for the design, and even attempt to recreate the design in photoshop. Take a visit to some of the bigger design firms who have high profile clients and take a look at their portfolio.

Doing this for awhile will help you get a feel for what the best in the biz do, and also help you develop your own unique style of mainstream design.

Same thing goes for flash... Flash is 90% creativity and 10% skill. Most people find it difficult and they think it's because they dont know how to use the tools, but that's not the reason. All the great flash pieces you see are composed primarily of simple tweens. It's difficult for most newcomers in flash because they don't have a developed sense of mainstream design. That's why I tell people to learn solid mainstream design techniques, BEFORE attempting to learn flash.

To check out well designed mainstream sites go to:

I agree once again, most design techniques are limited to what you can pull off in design programs, not what is actually in your head. With mainstream design, the cleaner the better, check out sites like ceonex.com and their clients, and cruise around the big guns (microsoft, nba.com, dell.com, etc. etc.) and notice the way they use 1 pixel differentiation to seperate content and colors.. no "blending" as commonly used in adult. A lot of people assume "design is design" but the adult world and mainstream world are seriously two different environments which should produce two different results.

try to realize in mainstream, the design should build credibility, unlike adult where design is based on persuasion.

I wouldn't know any of this unless I had one huge client a few years ago who was a huge pain in the ass on "clean" .... and i'm glad, because he was correct and very accurate.

I have a 2PM board meeting tomorrow. So if you want to do any tonight I'll be checking in the morning for any late submissions.

There are more than several solid top notch contenders so far that I've shown to people and got a "Wow" response on.

I have 2 people on there way now to go through them independently. And one of the top designers in the biz coming by tomorrow to give his opinion.

well, I was very ill and barely made time for this, but it's not an excuse since I was thinking on it all these days. Anyway, an absolutely different approach

why I chose to do this?

First: is the best way for a neutral style (no straight, no gay, no girlie): NO IMAGES!
Second: I noticed KRL taste for simple stuff, just took the logo, added a 3d feel, took the word men and bam, that's all
Third: It looks very simple yet elegant, and the space at top, instead of being a problem because of the chosen images, can be used to place banners (that I'm sure will cost way more than 1500! :winkwink: )
Fourth: If you place a banner there, it will "jump" to eye. If not, it will not distract the surfer eye from what really matters: the content

And last but not least: because I'm having nightmares with the guy who had an excess of radioactivity exposure and got his eyes fucked :winkwink: (KRL, women may like him, but the remaining 66.66%? I just saw him in this thread and if I saw that pic again I'll get the guy and crush his head with a baseball bat, imagine seeing that pic every single day as the main pic in your site. Just an opinion)

Very nice and clean gradient work, but I don't think the concept (the colour balance and the lack of images) will suit www.men.com very well. This doesn't look like a sexual related design, but its very nice otherwise.
