Back in '76 I was in Montreal for the Olympics. The CBC set my family up in a nice apartment on Lincoln ave, and from the top of the building (I remember it had a rooftop pool) we watched the fireworks for St. Jean Batiste day.

Unreal.

They were set off over Mount Royal park, and I'm telling you it was the best fireworks show I've seen in my life. I don't know if they kicked it up a notch due to the Olympics or what, but it was spectactular.

The downside of that day's celebration was the next day, when the entire park was found to be covered in trash, cups, wrappers, cans, bottles, broken glass, rolls of toilet paper etc etc. The Frenchies are a messy bunch.

Actually It's the day that we celebrate the birth of St Jean-baptist and summer solistace which are said to be related.

The "feux de la St-Jean" are found here as early as the 17th century. It was brought from France by the earliest settlers. Finding it's "pagan" origin in celebrating the summer solstice the event in itself was always, and still is in these days, mainly a popular event. But it is correct to believe that through the ages the event has been recuperated by all kinds of political tendencies.
