Where do you send your 402-405 Error Traffic?

Hi!

I created a script to send my error traffic directly to a sponsor, then realized that probably wasn't the best way to convert. I just moved my site to a new host, and some of the pages are not up yet.

Anyways, I changed it and created a 404 error page with a link to my main page, and links to sponsors, but do you send your other errors to sponsors? Are you allowed to? Any pay-per-blind-link sponsors that will take error traffic? (I see Amateur Pages blind link won't, or I'd send it there)

I have had my family in town and haven't been working on my sites I've enjoyed the visit and my sister's marriage but I am ready to get back to work! LOL.

You can send the traffic to your 404.html and have your sponsor banners there.

Ive always wondered why soo many people put such an emphisis on error 404 traffic pages..

If you are a good site, you shouldnt have error traffic, and if you do you should worry about your quality and fix it rather than try to make a penny off it.

Boneprone, that is because no mater hjow good you are with a site you will still get 404's

The reason being if you get linked to alot some times ppl put the wrong links up back to you thus creating 404 traffic......

Also if you have had a domain for a long period of time 404's are naturaly generated because of old files that once were there but now are gone or by simply moving hosts you can loose files n shit which would generate 404 traffic......

Also One key thing is htaccess you can prevent hotlinkers and other cool stuff and send the bastards hotlinking traffic directly to your sponser as well

I don't have too many problems with 404 error traffic except I use a Paid Host to TGP. When I get over a millions hits a month, it's a good idea.

On my 404 I have an Email box and links to other sponsors, and a mojosearch box. I think it's safe to say that if you have a lot of 404 traffic you could make at least $5 a month off the 404.html page.

Only once have I sold a recurring membership to a pay site on the 404. That's why I have some pay sites and some per click sponsors.

95% of the 404 traffic I get is from free-loading traffic trying to find stuff they aren't supposed to see. So I send most of my 404 traffic to places like join4free. And you can definitely make more than $5/day from 404 traffic if you're posting to TGPs.

Boneprone, I'll give you a simple example. For every 50,000 visitors/day I get to my galleries, at least 200 will wipe out the end of the URL and try to browse my image directory. At which point they are hit with a nice full page ad for Join4Free. Let's say 25% click on the ad (afterall they are looking for free stuff) and I convert at 1:10 - well, there's your 5 bucks easy. And what if they try backing out of the full page ad, well it's time they experience delayed console hell. Anything I get from that would just be a bonus.

404 errors are still traffic might as well make the best out of it. You can also direct your 404 to a new site where you wanna start pulling traffic to.

Headless, your right, when I first built my site, I had a REALLY BIG site, and registered the front page to the search engines.

Well, I cut it down, and have a lot less pages and pics, and built small sites on the back end.

Unfortunately, some of the old pages got spidered into Google, etc. and I get errors on those pages.

A few I have put redirects to some of the other small sites, but most just go 404 error...

And yes, I put htaccess because I was having a hotlink problem so they are getting my 404 page...

And I was also changing some of the image files alot (esp. galleries I listed on the hun, seemed they got hotlinked alot on bianca)

Thanks for the info!

I love this board...I learn somthing new all the time.

So how do I set it up to send 404 traffic to a sponsor? Is it done with .htaccess or what ever it's called?

Tomahawk, my only problem with that is some of this is my fault, not their fault! So the 404 I'm trying to be a little kinder to them, but all the other errors....look out!

yes, depending on how many 404's you do you can make a decent living from it. If for nothing else, you might as well make sure that your visitors never get to a page that doesn't have ads on it. If they don't have the option to click on an ad and get you a click or signup, then they CAN'T get you a click or a signup... I'd suggest having the 404 page look SOMETHING like the site that they are comming from, same background color or whatever.. but even if your making 2 cents per click, get 1000 clicks a day, thats still 2$, or the generic price of a gig of bandwidth a day... not bad when you think of it that way.

I hope nobody read my post wrong. I said I made $5 a month from the 404 page, not per day. At that rate it would be an average of $60/yr and that covers my cost for domains.

Still, $5 is better than $0.

I pick up a fair amount of 404 traffic from people purposefully poking around looking for password protected pages and trying to hotlink images. I send most of that traffic to click proggies that list the url link stats. I tried sending it to paypersignup for a short while but found that traffic to be highly unproductive.
