They want me to cut his balls off.

He's 3.5 years old and still very hyper. The Vet says his nuts create a cancer risk and the groomer says he will calm down if I have them chopped off.

I'm having a tough time with this one. He is clearly attached to his balls and if he did not like them then he would not spend so much of his free time licking them.

It just does not seem right to me.

Have them taken out and replaced with the stainless steel ones so that he thinks he's still got 'em.

why does the vet say so, does he mean cancer risk in general? If so, I would say leave them

I wouldn't do it.

Would you be willing to cut off YOUR balls to avoid a "cancer risk"?

Of course...This is the very same vet that kept him in the hospital over night to treat him for poisoning when the real issue was heat exhaustion.

I'd definately get a 2nd opinion before deciding.
Oh, and as for the groomer saying he'll 'calm down' once it's done...I don't beleive that for a minute. My Rottie will be 4 in December & he was neutered when we got him, but he's still as hyper as the day is long. lol

Why WOULDN'T you? Neutered and spayed dogs live longer, healthier lives and unless your dog won Westminster (or at least place ), I doubt there's any need for him to sire any puppies.

As someone has pointed out on another thread, I'm the female Bob Barker

Im not a vet, but I have owned quite a few doggies, having him neutered will certainly calm him down (slightly), if hes hyper. As far as cancer risks, not too sure.
I would say short of using him for breeding or having a female around for him to doink on, cut his nuts man, dogs get sexually frustrated.

My dog does come from a champion line but I fucked up and never followed up with the paperwork to register him with the AKC. I had intended to breed him but now I do not have the time.

Unfortunately, there are so many retrievers being killed each day in shelters that seriously, IMHO, unless your dog is one of the top 10-20 in the country, there's just no reason to breed him.

I'm kinda glad you haven't had the time

I know men who have had their nuts snipped off due to testicular cancer and they seem to be doing fine

BTW, my male pug was neutered when he was 1 and he never skipped a beat. He's 8 now and STILL humps my female.

My dog is neutered but he still licks that area... prettymuch all dogs do regardless.. for self-stimulation or grooming or whatever... doesn't mean anything psychological.

Unless he is of such exceptional health/form/intelligence, you really shouldn't breed him.. so he doesn't need his balls for anything. Why not then decrease his odds of getting sick?

At 3.5 years, IMO you're too late to change behavior much. Neutering at ~6 months - 1 year~ is a good way to prevent unwanted behaviors from developing (like humping and territory-marking) but those motivations are likely well imprinted in his brain by this time.
It may still be beneficial in lessening the urge to escape off to find bitches. Neutering generally helps to focus the dog on his owner/family instead.

If you're responsible, you won't contribute to pet overpopulation, so why torment him with desires that he can't act upon? Turn it off and he'll be content with just you.

Just a tad I guess. I get all my animals spayed or neutered and they all seem a little pissed off at first.

Our dog had his cut off year ago.He wasn't all that happy about it, but got over it and is a lot calmer now. We had a pretty good reason to cut him, that's too long to explain. It's a hard decision... I couldn't take him to the vet, my GF had to do it. lol.

It won't make him less hyper, my mother was told the same thing for her yellow lab at 2 years old. Still hyper, and now doesn't even give them a 10 minute break that he used to take to lay and lick em.

I have had dogs for as long as I can remember and I have never had that done to a dog.

The dogs I owned all reached an average age between 10 and 18 years.

So I tend to take that cancer risk by not having the balls cut off with a little salt.

If it doesn't feel right to you don't have it done.

I had made an appointment for my dog's Rabies shot. The Vet takes her in and then brings her out and asks me...BTW has your dog had her Rabies yet? I said that is what the appointment was for and that is the shot you were supposed to have just given her. He looked at his chart and said...oh...well make another appointment for two weeks from now and I will give her...her rabies shot for free. I do not recall what the shot he gave her was...but there also was not a charge for it.

Well its an acceptable fact that if HUMANS cut off their balls they will generally live longer. But I really haven't seen anybody doing this to reap the benefits.

Itīs not a problem for your dog. I think itīs a labrador, isnīt it. My lab had a cancer problem, too and "cutting the balls off" wasnīt a big problem. The only thing you have to take care of is the food. Some dogs get fat after that. Some people told me the character maybe changes, but it didnīt.

But if you want to be sure I would ask another vet for his opinion. I did the same and it was worth it, Iīm sure. Wish you and your dog much luck.

Get him neutered, Aaron. At the very least if he ends up getting out someday he won't end up being an illigitimate dad, or worse get sued for puppy support.
And they do have surgical prosthetics called "neuticals"now, so you could even get him a "bigger set" and it'll be more like cosmetic enhancement.

I shit you not, bro. The vet that invented them is in Independence, MO. Talk to your vet about them.

i dunno about the cancer thing - i never heard that b4

but i do know it will calm your dog right down and if elimnate the risk of him fathering little puppies all over your neighbourhood.

If he doesnt get out where he can run amuck then there is no need to chop em

Just do it, most knowledgable owners do unless theyre trying to breed the dogs. And if, God forbid, he ever got sick later on in life you'd never be able to forgive yourself.
Why risk it?
