SLR is a camera body which can take detachable lenses.
A standard point and shoot is a one piece deal, usually with a bit of a zoom built in.

SLR is single lens reflex - which means that when you look thru the viewfinder you are actually looking thru the optics in the lens - straight thru the lens. Digital cameras usually dont allow you to look thru the lens unless you buy the top of the line Nikon, Cannon and a few others.

SLR stands for single-lens reflex. That basically means that there is an angled mirror inside the camera blocking the film (or in a digital's case, the censor).
When you look through the view finder, the image you see is reflected off of the mirror through the lens so you're seeing exactly what the censor will see. When you press the shutter release, the mirror snaps out of the way letting the image hit the censor. If you take a look at a standard point and shoot, the view finder is a seperate little lens. So what you see through it may not be exactly what the censor will see, especially at close range. |

Digital SLRs (DSLRs) usually have a larger sensor compared to compact digitals, which means better image quality (less noise and artifacts).
For example, the output from a Canon 300D SLR (6MP) is superior to the output from a Canon Pro1 compact/zoom (8MP). More megapixels doesn't always equal better quality. If you want to take pics to put on your desktop or send to friends the difference doesn't really matter. If you want to print out posters, then it may be more relevant. ![]() |
