do companies ofter both the SLR model and the other? And if so, is there usually a price difference to get the SLR model?

Not necessarily, SLR's are generally higher end and the lenses you can purchase are usually of better quality. In addition, SLR's are typically faster. If I really want to get crazy with my Cannon 10D, I can snap off 300 or so pictures in about 10 minutes. With my Nikon 990, I'm lucky if I can shoot 60 in that length of time.
