Cholesterol Shocker !!!

Had some blood work done and my total cholesterol came back at 279! Holy cow. I'm in reasonably good shape and watch what I eat. My wife eats like crap and has perfect numbers. They are doing a more thorough workup (HDL, LDL, etc.), but it looks like Lipitor City may be in store for me ...

Maybe the doctor will suggest dietary changes, more exercise and suppliments before resorting to meds. Anyone else get their cholesterol checked?

Lipitor works good from what I hear. My family has a history of high cholesterol, one of my cousins was up to over 800 at one point and they put him on Lipitor, now its down in the 200-300 range, which is good for him.

For the past two years I was working real hard and playing (aka. partying) real hard too. During the week I was too tired to go to the gym and opted for some unnecessarily heavy nights of drinking. Also I was under a lot of stress at work and I resorted to food and alcohol to relieve my stress. Bad choice. After about two years of dodging my 6 month check up I finally went to my doc and did a physical. I didn't do any permanent damage but my cholesterol was in bad shape. It was 230 or 240 (border line high). I started excercising again regularly, I don't have benders anymore and I try to watch what I eat. It's really not that hard. It was hell for like the first three weeks but after that it's real easy. I basically stay away from fast food with the exception of Subway and my occasional Wendy's Spicy Chicken which I limit to like once a month. Red meat is a no-no also but I still enjoy a steak every two-three weeks, however I don't eat roast beef sandwiches every day like I used too. Basically try to stay away from red meat, egg yokes and anything deep fried. Try eating salads at least three times a week for dinner. You'll feel much better. I just turned 30 and I feel so much better then I felt during the second half of my twenties. I was by no means fat or obese but I did have some extra padding that I could have done without. After about 6 months my cholesterol is back to normal, the extra padding is gone and I feel great. I still enjoy everyting I had before but the new keyword for me is moderation. Once more thing; only do Lipitor or any other cholesterol drug as your last case scenario. For one you don't want to be a slave to a pill everyday and two your body will get used to the fact that you are taking this drug and will work less and less to reduce your cholesterol. Try it the natural way first. Good luck man we're here for you...

I go back for the full review next week. From what I hear, the docs love to push the statin drugs right away but I'm gonna fight it if possible. Thanks.

I got mine checked not too long ago, hottoddy. I found out that I high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The doctor prescribed 10 mg of Crestor rosuvastatin calcium to be taken daily for six weeks. After that, I get tested again.

The doctor didn't tell me what to cut back eating to lower the cholesterol but he did tell me to get more excercise for my blood pressure. I have been walking six blocks once in the mornings and again in the evenings. I cut back on sweets and carbs a few weeks ago to lose some weight. So now I have to watch the cholesterol in the foods I eat.

I did some searching on google for some lowering cholesterol tips and you can find them too. The biggest tip is to be sure to read the labels at the store. Be sure to eat fish at least two times a week. Also, KobyBoy's post about staying away from red meat, egg yokes and anything deep fried is right on target.

I also find out last week that I get to wear bifocals at the age of 39

before you go any further brother do a search on google or yahoo for lipitor or zocore or any of the statin drugs.

these things shut down your liver while you sleep, and you wake in debt for liver function.

I learned the hard way.

I had a heart attack and 4 way bypass 3 years ago.

then the zocore damn near killed me a few months ago. now I have permanent liver damage and muscle damage.

this ain't nothing to fuck around with.

and yes it is serious.

get at least 3 test be for you do anything.

this could kill you, if some clown fucks up a lab report.

My doc told me (and I've read it in several other places) that only about 1/3rd of your cholesterol is because of your diet. The other 2/3 is literally genetic disposition.

(David Letterman is a good example..guy kept in good shape, didn't drink, smoke, etc but had the bypass operation 2 years ago. His father died at the age he is now from a heart attack. Letterman joked once that his cholesterol was *400*. Don't know if he was serious or not)

Lipitor (I take) and other statins not only knock the crap out of your cholesterol (for most people), but now they're finding evidence that it may be helpful in preventing different types of cancer too.

Take your lipitor daily! You don't want to mess around with high cholesterol. Get your hdl (good chol) up and your ldl (bad) down.

Ok, here's the natural stuff I found that supposedly helps control bad cholesterol while supporting the good:

Niacin (regular form, not time released)
Lecithin
Omega 3 & 6s (Fish & Flaxseed oil)
Red Rice Yeast (statin-like properties)
Vitamin C & Lysine (Linus Pauling theory)

Any others (apart from diet and exercise)?

Yeah, I got stress for sure, but no sign of diabetes. Blood sugars and pretty much everything else checked out fine. Thank goodness.

My Cholesterol was 251....

My Doc put my on Lipitor, it was down to 166 in 30 days. According to my doc my liver doesn't mind as of the first checkup.

I go back in about 3 months for a follow up. I'm a big fan of Lipitor so far.

I had mine done a year or so back when I got
life insurance. Mine was high too, I need to get it
rechecked to make sure its not worse.

Can lead to a young heart attack if untreated.

Sorry but the high cholesterol level can be a very early sign... and the diabetes can show up like 10 yr later so you should take something for it.
