The official Cybernet Expo feedback thread
Ok folks... if you went to the show, I'm looking for feedback here on anything and everything... what worked, what didn't, etc. Give it to me straight... ranging from big stuff like venue, sponsorships, events etc. on down to the small stuff (if you are so inclined to comment about it) like water pressure, parking, your waitress... whatever.
If you didn't go... what was your reason? What will it take for you to attend the next one? I do know that the event went well overall and greatly appreciate all the kudos thrown my way and to YNOT Bob, Fay and Dave and everyone else who helped with putting it all together. But let's get to the nitty gritty here and help make Cybernet Expo even better next year. If you wish to keep it off the boards... ICQ me at 92418228 or email jay at ynot dot com. I will be discussing everything with Fay, Dave and Bob. Thanks and please discuss...

Jay,
It was a great show for us and I applaud you for putting it all together. We were pleased with our corporate sponsorship and the turnout. It was great hanging with you too. Mitch

Great show! Good for networking. I had an opportunity to see so many people and actually have meetings. Joan ASACP

As a sponsor I would have liked to have more people hit the booth... first day it was difficult to get people into the 2nd room.
One other thing, it would be nice to have high speed internet in all rooms at an internet convention! On a side note, I enjoyed spending time with ya LAJ! ![]() |

LAJ,
I wanted to thank you again for your role as host at the seminars! I found them very productive.

Keep em coming folks and thanks!
Mike AI... I've got to say it was a pleasure hanging out with you, Luke, Cory, Gabe, Gonzo and the whole Purecash/Wegcash/oprano, etc. crew. Thanks again for sponsoring and for the donuts and for hanging out in your suite... LOL... you guys are great. "As a sponsor I would have liked to have more people hit the booth... first day it was difficult to get people into the 2nd room." -- Agreed... at first it was tricky (especially due to the weather). Big prob with that was that some people didn't follow banner instructions to a T, and so we had to close the curtain in the convention center in case looky loos peeked in from outside and saw dirty words and images LOL. I think by day two everyone was visiting the room and visiting the bar... opening the curtains and shifting a few things around hopefully helped. "One other thing, it would be nice to have high speed internet in all rooms at an internet convention!" -- Yup, agreed... and we did have plenty of rooms blocked off with access, but unfortunately the people who reserved their rooms late lost out. We could have set aside more rooms with access but would have to eat the cost if we didn't sell the rooms (will know for next time that this is a big priority ![]()

I'll give it more thought and send more feedback soon, but off the top of my head... I heard the most complaints about the hotel. Specifically, no mini-bar or late-night room service, and limited high-speed internet access.

LAJ, we finally met after my frantic ICQ's
![]() All in all, I think it was a great show. I had one of the rooms on the bottom level of the courtyard building and from what I could tell, except for those who had the marina view, it was one of the best $135 rooms. And it DIDN'T smell like ass ![]() I'm not sure I would have had the booths for more than one day. People really started thinning towards the end of the first day and were almost non-existent the 2nd. But there was a LOT of business to do outside ![]() Food - I haven't been to a Phoenix show, but I heard a lot of people say that the placings of time of day relevant food really kept people around the show. I didn't have a laptop, but I'm sure you're aware of the high speed internet concerns. Just a few VERY minor suggestions, but since you asked...... ![]() San Diego is a perfect place to have it, IMHO and the weather could not have been better. I can see why a lot of you are willing to pay $1mil for a 1700 sq ft house with no yard and $2.50 for a gallon of gas ![]() BTW, the WTS offices are in Austin, you should look them up! |

I thought this show was super... I have honestly never hit seminars I did this time and they were semi informative *good panels, etc*
the only obvious issue would be lack of internet *which I am very sure you had no control over, hard to figure you calling the hotel 3 days in advance and politely asking to limit internet in the hotel...lol* So all in all a really good show, and as well I also did not know where the network room was.... until the second day at least I will for sure be hitting any future shows you help organize...as well I will make the effort to pack WiredGuy in my carry on, so no matter where the next one is...he will be forced to make an appearance as well. Tim

The seminars at the San Diego show were much more pertinent to me than those at the Vegas Internext. Also, this was my third convention and the first time JFK has ever taken my picture. So, I have to say that this convention was the best!

THe fact that there was no 'un-official' place large enought to gather in bigger groups than 5 was a problem, IMO...
THat bar was so tiny it would not fit the bill... and the fact that it closed so early was another drawback.... People sat to chat in the courtyard, but security was picky about noise issues! LOL The overall forum was great.... we got lots of business done, but like was said, it was done outside where everyone gathered, so they could smoke.... I Think that was a deterent to keeping people inside as well.... |

As always-good job LAJ et al..
Thanks for the sponsor mentions. The "Q" show..oops, I mean panels- were great. I particularly liked the Hot Topics panel. Seemed to be much more relevant info and appeared to elicit more audience participation. Kudos- lee

I mentioned a couple of these when you asked me in SD, but I will mention them again in case you forgot or if someone wants to comment:
1. The hotel obviously was used to Christian groups with no money using their facilities more than porn webmasters with money as they seemed to be lacking when it came to service in the bar and restaurant. 2. The programs should tell who would bew speaking on the seminar panels (or at least the scheduled speakers) 3. The flyers announcing parties could have had a little more complete info also. I stayed down the street, so did not go into very many rooms, but one of them I went into was pretty nasty smelling for sure, and I don't think it was from the temporary occupants. I am still glad I made the drive down for sure, was well worth it. |

Albiet...I did my share of the complaining let us all remember...
Mainstream hotels/ the nicer places really dont want adult business. I know by being involved with several local offsire swingers clubs that there is a difficulty in procuring a site that is flexibile enough to put up with the "shit" these groups bring. Plus factor in a cost that everyone is comfortable in paying. You walk a fine line its either a place like Cybernet or a place like in Hollywood and then some times you luck out in Atlanta. All in all I think it was a nice gathering. Bar needed to be prepared to stay open...net access was addressed in part by cybernet....and I think some folks didnt like the rooms but it still went off pretty well. Heres to the next one! PS....did anyone learn anything about "adult posters?"

Thanks MFM... it was great to finally meet you bro!
Hey Baddog... thanks for reminding me... I do remember our conversation ![]() 1. The hotel obviously was used to Christian groups with no money using their facilities more than porn webmasters with money as they seemed to be lacking when it came to service in the bar and restaurant. --- They apparently learned their lesson in the hotel wrapup meeting. Here's a funny aside... I cabbed it to the airport with one of the women from the Christian group. She was pissed that her boss made a sexual advance at her and that she had a rotten time at her event. When I told her who I am and what I do, she said "I should have fuckin gone to your show instead" LOL... 2. The programs should tell who would bew speaking on the seminar panels (or at least the scheduled speakers) --- Agreed. The only prob with that is, there were quite a few last minute cancellations and changes. Next year I think we'll try to do that tho. 3. The flyers announcing parties could have had a little more complete info also. --- agreed I stayed down the street, so did not go into very many rooms, but one of them I went into was pretty nasty smelling for sure, and I don't think it was from the temporary occupants. --- Were the Christians in there?

![]() Other than the lack of late-night room service and a bar the size of my closet, I really had no issues. I had a great time, but I would suggest that perhaps next time there could be a place for late-night webmaster groups to sit and chill; we had to gather all the chairs and tables in the courtyard ourselves on Friday night to talk. Good times, good times. ![]() |

Things that struck me as particularly well done:
-The Corridor cruising -The giveaways/sponsor words at the end of each panel. -National Net Party Things I would improve - lunch plans (maybe a lunch sponsor?) Or some trail mix. Mid day was tough on my belly. -make Cory wear a cowbell so I would know when he was about to grab my butt. Overall, a great show! |

I had a great time, I was very impressed by the number of people who showed up and it wasn't necessarily the same old show crowd that of course we all know and love.
![]() Things I Would Change: 1. Internet Access Obviously 2. Better Rooms (cooridor cruising rooms were not as nice as the other ones, but oh well they were thrown into the package so I can't complain that much) 3. Better communication with the scheduling staff of the hotel, a christian event and porn conference are not the 2 best events held in conjunction with each other LOL! 4. Two words..... MINI BAR! 5. If you are going to charge 3k for a registration party sponsorship do it as an OPEN BAR. I was going to sponsor the registration party but in retospect I am very glad I didn't. You had to almost chase people around for drink tickets. Sure the sponsors had them but in many cases I just said fuck it and paid for my own drinks. If I was sponsoring that party I would have been EXTREMELY upset. There were 3 sponsors that kicked in 3k each for that party... Total of 9k. I don't think we drank 9k in booze ![]() Otherwise I think it was a great show. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and our sponsorship of the cooridor cruising was 110% worth it. You could'nt have picked a better local to host a show. We will definetely attend again! ![]() DH |

Great Job Jay...I like the fact the focus on this event was education and learning ...although we did get our fair share of partying in...much different than the Internext shows where the focus is more on the exhibition hall...all in all I learned a lot had met a lot of new friends

I'd have to say my hat is off to you as well as Fay and Dave Jay-
Picked a great hotel, the people comnig into our town got to experience some great weather this time of the year- San Diego is like this all year round- FLA is NOT! Location , Location , Location I'd opt for the next one to be on Shelter Island :-)) Or closer to my house! Everyone I spoke to there said they were doing business which is ultimately why you have these conventions in the first place. ![]()

The biggies to improve it seems:
More rooms for us with internet access... More access to alcohol at all times... A daily Lunch sponsor... Perhaps tables for the sponsors at the opening party... Thanks for the feedback folks. It really helps. And DH... plenty of alcohol was consumed at that opening party... perhaps not 9k but definitely a shitload ![]() So far no complaints from yankscash, webair or porndvddollars.

The bad:
- my first room I checked into smelled like a freshly laid bug bomb, luckily, I got there a day early and was able to switch to a different room - the service in the restaurant was terrible - the bar was very small and closed way too early - while I managed to keep my language clean due to the family element there, it was tough to "talk shop" sometimes when you ad to constantly look around for a child or family (I look at the more a problem with theo hotel booking them so close together and not a reflection on the show itself) - the booths seemed out of place since there were only a handful - the natnet suite only came about because Bill and Matt were able to pul something together last minute (this isn't a knock against Netnet who fucking rock or cybernet, but the hotel's lack of facilities fora hospitality suite - the noise complints when we'd be trying to have discussions in the coutryard (again, lack of adequate facilities for this type of show) The Good - the hotel was very accomodating in taking care of some of the problems - I had a lot of face time and am looking forward to doing a LOT of business with those who I had some very strong actual business conversations with - The seminars were informative and I liked the prize give-a-way aspet...it kept me stickin around longer to a seminar I might have walked out of and in a couple cases, I glad I did end up sticking around as there was good information towards the end of the seminars - I won 12 domain names from moniker.com ;-) - The party schedule was simple and unlike InterNext with a bunch of parties up against each other and the frantic race to make an appearance at each one. It also gave people opportunities to do their own get togethers aside from the "official" parties for those who didn't want to attend them - The Player's Ball switching from all rap and hiphop to reggae was a nice change of pace (hey, how about a rock show at an upcoming convention? ;-)) - The TJ trip was a nice diversion that allowed for some fun and frolic and still a little of a networking element - The NateNet party at On Braodway was an AMAZING party and a great time was had by all (especially when the scruity guards started letting in some hotties who weren't quite part of the convention, but added to the scenery of the party - The corridor cruising was a great way for small companies to exhibit with limited budgets and I loved the way it turned out and really enjoyed some of the goodies as well as face time with some of the other sponsors, a couple of whom I wasn't really aware of going into the show. - The show also opened dialog with a major company (out of respect, I won't mention the company until everything is official) to take part in a major project a friend of mine is working on - The welcome reception was a fun way to get together, drink some beers, have an arm wrestling competition (well, ok, one male vs. female arm wrestling match that lead to some low stakes betting and a ton of fun), and again, get some face time All in all, one of the better shows I've attended in a long time and a big hat's off to Faye, Dave, LAJ and YNOT Bob (who I somehow missed every time at the show). I not only had a lot of fun, drank way too much and made some great contacts, but the openings to some great business was done...and that's what it's all about.

I will point out some of the drawbacks in holding a show in the San Diego area.....
1. There is absolutely NO bar or club that will stay open past 2am. They all value their liquor licenses too much!!! 2. San Diego is a tourist area. They have a convention center for those doing conventions that are over a couple of hundred people - but that is not what Cybernet does... we try to keep people together. . Many of the nice hotels do not have more than meeting rooms. This is also why they are not all internet rooms in most of the hotels. Although this hotel DID have many & WE HAD THEM ON HOLD UNTIL 30 DAYS OUT. When I say 'ya snooze - ya lose - there is a reason! We had to give over a dozen rooms back that had not been reserved & we did offer FREE wireless in many areas, and many webmasters took advantage of it. 3. San Diego (as with many nice locations) are consertative when it comes to even considering hosting an Adult convention of 600 people, unless you can buy out the whole hotel. BTW - Figure 300 people on a flow attending a welcoming party that started at 7pm & was open until 1am - what part of that tab do many small companies want to guarantee? Yes, sometimes new sponsors need a little coaching on getting the tickets out - but it is all good! All of the tickets were used during the 6 hours..... We list complete information on the website and the Show Daily offers as much consise info that can be determined until 7 days before the show. When we don't get the info - we can't distribute it. Many parties seem to always be put together at the last minute. I am glad that so many of you had a great time, and we appreciate your feed back. Not everything can be changed, but many can with good cooperation. |
