RIP Ray Charles

Just saw a blurb on the CNN ticker. Still looking for online info.

Found it..

"BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Ray Charles (news), the Grammy-winning crooner credited with creating American soul music with a blend of gospel and blues in such crowd-pleasers as "What'd I Say" and "I Got A Woman" and heartfelt ballads like "Georgia on My Mind," died Thursday. He was 73.

Charles died at 11:35 a.m., surrounded by family and friends, said spokesman Jerry Digney. "

The blind black guy, older than Stevie Wonder?

I just saw him live a couple of years ago -- still a fantastic entertainer, but obviously on his last legs. It was very moving.

it will be. I'd be willing to bet he'll be buried old school new orleans style, which means a HUGE jazz procession through the city.

I live in America where people are free to be into different kinds of music. I never cared for blues/jazz, so I know nothing about this guy, or any other guy in that genre. Plus, I'm probably in a younger generation than his target audience.

Hehehe -- I forgot about that! God, didn't you just think he was going to keel over any second though? The show I saw was in Tacoma, WA - I just had to look it up in my journal:

"LEG-SWINGING LEGEND
Wow. I saw/heard Ray Charles tonight in concert. It's amazing to me how resilient & strong people are . . . and how frail and fleshy too. He was helped onto the stage and started out coughing and hacking a bit. Some of the sustained high notes came out as silent crackly static screams. But still there was no doubt we were in the presence of a super-talented legend. The force of his voice, the style of his piano playing, his personality . . . it was a privilege to witness in real life. The high points for me were him singing 'Your Cheatin' Heart' and 'It's not Easy Being Green'."
