Digital Camcorders

Hello can any of you help me by suggesting a good one to buy... I'm heading to Florida for spring break and would like to tape and sell the wet t-shirt contests.

I'm not looking for the best and most expensive just somthing good for the price and will get the job done.

Thanks,
XTC

Sony TVR120 - $599 at Best Buy. It's digital 8 and has a 2.5" tft screen. We use them here.

I second Lensman's opinion.

I've had a few digi cameras and unless you want to spend 5k that sony is hard to beat.

Excellent. I kept meaning to ask about digi camcorders, but always forgot to because of all the other interesting topics that seem to catch my fancy.

Is it true that digi camcorders break a lot more often than regular ones?

Does that Sony happen to double as a still camera? Also, what's this about digi-camcorders breaking more often?

Thanks for the replies, now for a second question... how would one go about converting the diital video to a VHS tape and what special software and equipment would you need?

Regards,
XTC

I think you have to make sure the unit has RCA video os S-Video outputs. I believe they all do. Then you have to make sure your VCR has the proper inputs... i.e. if the unit has S-Video out, well, I think you get the point.

If you wanted to edit the videos on your computer you just need to buy a firewire kit. They are around $100.00, software included. Just make sure you have a decent computer. I wouldn't recommend anything less than a P3 with 128 MB RAM and a fast hard drive.

If you want to edit old VHS tapes you have lying around, make sure you get a digicam with an analog input. Surprisingly, alot of them don't have that feature.

I use a Canon ZR10, which is Mini-DV. It works good, but the picture kind of suffers in low light, especially compared to the Sony's low light mode. I'm gonna have to buy the light attachment for it. But, if you want a cheap Mini-DV, it is good choice. I can fit it in my coat pocket too. I like sneaking it into bars to tape the shenanigans that go on when my alcoholic friends reach their boiling point.

If you want one that can take stills as well, then make sure you buy one that is progressive scan. The stills on all the non-progressive scan models are useless.

While most digital still cameras do take stills these days, they suck. If you want any kind of quality you'll need a separate still camera - these days quality stills can be had for really cheap so it won't break you

OK, so I'm having a get-together this weekend, maybe, and I'm going to want a digital still camera.... What is the suggested still digital camera. Keep in mind, folks, that I am NOT in Lensman's or Lightning's tax bracket.

I bought a Sony FD91 digital camera two years ago but for the last year have wanted to get one of those Sony Hi-8 cameras, but dammit, I paid $999 for that camera!!! So it is hard for me to swallow that I should shell out $600 for another cam.
