Texas Chainsaw Massacre

True or not? Help me settle an argument. I heard it was fake but the movie says based on a true story. Anyone got the answer?
I was thinking of renting it.

There was never a chainsaw massacre in Texas.
some of Leatherface's characteristics were borrowed from Ed Gein (who was also the inspiration for "Psycho" and Buffalo Bill in "Silence Of The Lambs")

It is a work of fiction, Tobe Hooper came up with the idea when he was in a hardware store and saw the chainsaws on the wall and the crowd of people ahed of him.

As mentioned above, it's fake, but the movies are still funny. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, with Dennis Hopper, is easily the most fucked up movie of the bunch.

The best part of that whole movie was the car/truck chase scene where the driver gets sawed up good. Sawed up real good. Just watched it again this past weekend actually.

I also loved the scene of Hopper with the chainsaws, going through the underground entrance singing "Bringing In The Sheen"

no worries

there's a great (hard to find) documentary called "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Porttrait" that talks to the major stars of the movie and offers some behind the scenes stuff. Highly entertaining stuff and a pisser to know that most of the actors got stiffed from the investors in the movie, who ran off with all of the money it made

So it was loosely based on a true story: not in Texas, there wasnt a chainsaw, and his name wasnt Hewitt. sigh

the elements borrowed from Ed Gein: cannibalism, wearing the skin of the dead (Ed would wear the skin of his grave robbing victims and his mother's clothes and dance in the moonlight), the furniture made of human remains
but there was no chainsaw, no massacre and it was in Wisconsin, not Texas...there was no cannibal family and no Hewitts, Sawyers, etc....not even a Hardesty family ;-)

Even though I felt a remake was totally unnecessary, I liked the remake (much more than I wanted to ;-))

consider it a sequel..had elements of the 1st one but much more leatherface. A more action packed movie

I enjoyed it much more than the new Dawn fo the Dead wich sucked
