Domestic Violence

I was thinking today about how many webmasters lived with domestic violence when they were children.

Someone posted a thread about reporting his neighbor for a domestic violence incident and the response to that thread is what I was noticing.

When I was little (until age 13) my parents drank and fought almost every night. I would stay awake listening to them scared out of my wits, and to this day, I can't stand being around people who fight.

This isn't something that just happens with poor people, it's something that spreads throughout many income groups.

In my case, it was alcoholism that fueled this violence, as soon as my parents quit drinking, all of it stopped. I was 13 when that happened, but still have bad dreams about those awful nights to this day.

I do what I can to overcome the reprecussions of it, but I realise it's never going to leave me totally. It's like an old friend, who's not really all that friendly.

My parents got a little rowdy from time to time, but it never really bothered me.

Domestic violence is shitty, its an unfortunate part of some peoples lives, and it shouldn't be.

Something my mom said to me years later really floored me.. she said, "I didn't think you knew"

wow.. how could she think that?

Kids know what's going on.. and if parents don't think so, they're just kidding themselves

mine loved each other too.. and the next morning you could see that, even though my mom had black eyes and bruises.. They are like different people now that they don't drink.. they've been dry for over 40 years now

i had really good parents and never had to deal with anything that bad. but my husband did. he doesnt talk about it alot but when he does it really breaks my heart. im really sorry you had to go thru that as a child. no one should have to.

Tia I understand where you are coming from.

For years and years my sister and I put up with our parents fighting every night and from around 11 and 12 we would sit with our brother to hide him from the fights...

Breaking glass, throwing of plates, crystal you name it....

There are so many people who go through things like this and I've finally decided to do something about it...

I started a mainstream site, a site where women and men can share their stories, which I am still in the process of building but its up there and is growing each week.

When this is to the stage that I can keep it flowing there will be a male one just like it and stories are already coming in for that one as well...

How very true... kids maybe small, they may be young but they know and they suffer for years and years...

I left that and went into a relationship with a guy just like it, but now he has gone and I have Steve who is very much my support mechanism for down days....

I remember going to my brother's 21st and something happened, which I won't say here, but the result was him trying to strangle my mother in front of many people. He did what my father would do to my mother all those years ago.

After many people tried to calm him down, he fell asleep in my arms like he had when he was only a small kid...

That's absolut stupid and wrong. Parents should never beat their childs...

cayne, you misunderstood.. I was never beaten and neither was cheeky, I don't think..

it was our parents that were doing the fighting.

I was only talking about my parents fighting all the time, day in day out and yet they went out together, had fun together but have a few drinks or if dad was late home from work again...


Not actually beaten but certainly disciplined more than most kids, not just once but twice for doing things wrong....

A few words sort of stick in the mind a fair bit, "Wait till your father gets home!" and that was after the first round of punishments...

good thing i had a happy childhood, i was blessed with a wonderful parents, but yes domestic violence is all around the corner
