What a good dog.

This is Buddy. One of the dogs we rescued months back.

Some neighbors just bailed on 2 dogs leaving them in the front yard with a bowl of water and some food.

One was a puppy and we could get him placed in a no kill shelter for adoption, but Buddy was a little older and just too rambunctious and we knew it would be difficult for him to get placed so we kept him.

Anyway I've been clicker training him, and he's been trained to go to a place under my desk during school hours and once my nieces get home then he is able to roam the rest of the house.

Now if I could only train him to organize the cords under my desk.

How's clicker training working for you? I just got a new papillion puppy last Wednesday and I'm up for trying clicker train her.

Did you know it before? Or did you just learn?

Just learning..bought a book and a ton of Bil-Jac liver treats...and it's working wonders.

This dog was pretty much out of control when we took him in and he's now a lot more under control.

I just need to spend more time on some other things like chewing. He likes to gnaw on things so we have to have plenty of chew toys around to give him something other than whatever is convenient...LOL

We have currently 4 dogs and 2 cats.

My dog Kerouac, my sister's dachshund Katie..when my mother passed we took in her dog Lisa, then buddy...2 cats are both adopted...Rudy the most recent was adopted the Christmas before last...I'm not real fond of cats they're okay but he's probably one of the most loving cats I've ever come across.

When I had my long beard he used to jump on my chest while I was working and want to groom it.

I was driving one day with my sister, it was during winter and was really freezing, and sunddenly we saw a dog right next to the road.(it was in the woods). The dog was so cold and hungry, he was there at least for two, three days.....We took him to the car and to the vet doctor. the doctor said that somebody was beating the dog and than probably left the dog in the woods...... I wanted to take care of him but I have already one dog and I am gone all the time, so I realized that my friend was looking for some dog, I called her then I went over and she said alright, welcome home doggy.......
The dog is so happy right now and getting what he needs.

My point is that I am getting angry and mad to hear that some people don't have even the courage to take the dog to the dog shelter instead leaving them in the middle of the woods.....
I am conspuing those kind of people....----) assholes!!!

It's where you click this little "clicker" noise maker when the dog does something you want him to do and then you reward them with a treat.

For instance in getting buddy trained to recognize that spot as his when he's in my office I would ignore him when he went elsewhere and when he would go to that spot I would click and then give him a treat.

After time you start drawing the clicks out...I started with a minute..then upped it to 2 then 5 then 15 and so on so finally he gets used to just knowing that's where he's supposed to be.

Now when I bring him into the office it's the first place he heads waiting for his click and treat.

He just sits there most of the day..takes a nap and only moves when I start to play fetch with him.

I take a chew stick and throw it across the office and as soon as he grabs it it's right back to his spot.

This is a dog that just about 2 weeks ago we could only let in the house for brief amounts of time....and only while supervised.

But how do you get him to stay there the whole day? Especially when he's unsupervised? Wouldn't he just get the treat and then leave?

When he's unsupervised....that part has not been dealt with yet.

When I leave the office he usually comes and stands by the door but as soon as I reenter he goes right back to his spot under the des...now the next step is to teach him to "stay."

Regarding the treat you don't leave it for them you keep it out of sight in your hand etc..if that becomes a distraction always looking at your hand you put it elsewhere and once he does the right thing I click the clicker and give him a treat...it works wonders.

a rescued dog like that will become the most loyal and the most loving to you once he settles in......dogs may seem stupid...but it is almost as if they remember....they know what a gift they have been given.
