Wireless networking question

I am going to get a Linksys wireless router, should I get wireless-b, wireless-g, or something else that I didn't see at Best Buy. I am basically just going to use it to work on my laptop on my deck and in the yard, but I don't want something that's going to be obsolete in a week. What's the difference between wireless-b and wireless-g, and which one should I get? Suggestions please.

For surfing it doesn't matter whether you use 801.11b or 802.11g since your high speed connection is still slower than 802.11b.

802.11b = 11Mb/sec.
802.11g = 54Mb/sec.

Also, 802.11G gives you a bit more distance when there are walls/doors in the way as it yields more bandwidth to catch on the 2.4Ghz signal....keep that in mind when selecting which you want and thinking about where the router itself will sit.

As it was pointed out earlier, unless you are doing something hardcore, it probably doesn't matter.

Think of it like old 10 M routers versus 100M routers. Unless you are pushing lots of traffic over the network it doesn't matter, but if you have the cash why not go for the G?

Either way you are probably going to fill your Cable/DSL connection long before you flex your local network.

Hey SP get one with both, like mine! All the latest ones offer both. Basically b is slightly older technology than g so if you get g and it's backwardly compatible then your covered for all eventualitlies.

just remember when you buy it, if you're using a builtin wifi card in your laptop thats only b, the g is worthless. if you're going to buy both, get G

I am going to use the card on my laptop, it doesn't have an integrated one, but I am going to get a Powerbook soon, any idea if that only supports B, G, or both?
