When shopping for a computer...

... aren't you tempted to add lots of stuff you don't need? Even if they're expensive.

Examples:
- Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum or Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum when just
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 would be perfect for you?

- ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB when a 128MB video card would be more than enought?

- Lots of RAM

Computers in Brazil cost 70%+ more than in USA

If I were in USA I would get a 18" LCD, but here it costs like $1150. I'll go get a normal monitor... 19" or 17". The 19" is $350.

Yeah I tend to go a little overboard sometimes too.

I have a Radeon 9600 pro 128 meg video card, and its not bad.

I mean, of course I wouldn't buy any of Audigy 2 sound cards... but don't they look great with all that holes and stuff?

But the 256MB video card and "MORE RAM" is almost a urge for me.

Damn, I just noticed it was on my shopping cart (put it there to calculate shipping). I deleted from my shopping cart and it was available again... so I clicked again and put it back there. I need to think fast.

If you're getting a 19" monitor, you should consider the IIYAMA HM903DTA. I bought it 8 months ago and I'm very satisfied with it

60% customs tax

I decided I'll get the Radeon 9600 128MB and no sound card, since I found the motherboard already has a good one.

Not sure about the monitor, if 17" or 19".

gotta be smarter about your hardware. Don't try to jam everything on one system.

for example, I have one machine here that is only used for storing software setup programs, playing music (and music storage) and storing other older archived files that I need but don't want clogging another machine.

I have another machine that is used only as a message center, personal stuff like my accounting program, personal photos, etc.

another system that is only for running a convenience Internet connection, and music for the rest of the house.

and so now, I'm in the process of ordering a big freak of a system with 4gb of RAM, dual CPUs, high end graphic card, etc..... but it will NOT have any of the junk it doesn't need.... like a overpriced sound card, etc..... and that machine will be 100% strictly for graphic work. No bullshit allowed on that machine. So, not only with the bigger better hardware, but combined with the lack of all the other crap that I have spread out over other systems, it will operate (and stay operating) at lightspeed.

Harddrives here are stacked a plenty, in 250gb chunks, and run on external hot swappable firewire drives. Able to pull and switch any of them from one machine to the next in seconds.

and the whole damn works is all connected through a LAN, so everything on every machine is accessible from Windows Explorer.

and that's a much better setup than trying to jam everything into one box.
