When the draft is coming - what will you do?

I figure this includes 70% of the people around here.

I am including the 14 year olds hanging out here too, as the draft will go on for a few years. When they'll be drafting in 2005 (?) and sending everyone from 18-26 to Iraq and other assorted shitholes, what will you do? Will you protest? Go to Canada? Go to jail? Or will you go dodge bullets in sunny Iraq/Afghanistan? |

Wanna make bet there is no draft in 2005?

The military turns down tons of people who try to join as it is. They do not want unmotivated people in the service, then we end up with more people who act unprofessionally. But I am willing to put money on this. Are you? |

But I can see good reasons why there would be a draft. Keeping that many troops in a combat area over a pro-longed period will require heavy rotation. I think it all comes down to simple numbers. There might not be a shortage of soldiers NOW, but if this keeps up... A draft could be avoided by trying to involve foreign nations, maybe the UN, but that would require some major changes in the foreign policy of the US. |

For every person who goes into combat there are 6-7 support personel. Ask Peaches about her son's experience..... the US Military is very picky on who they let in. ( at least for now) |

Some things are waiverable but they are hitting recruitment levels at all time records, 64% of those currently in the AF are reenlisting and they are trying to move 16K jobs to the army or civilians. The combat forces, Army and Marines, are easier to get into - especially the Army - but they are still turning down by the hundreds those who have minimal problems. Merely removing some of the restrictions would keep them from having a draft, IMHO. |

There are 1.5 million in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines and 1.3 million in the guard and reserves. There are also millions more who have left the service but could be recalled if needed. Also recruiters are turning away more than they accept and of those who are accepted some have to be put on a waiting list every year once recruiting goals for the year have been met. Then consider the fact that there are only 130,000+ troops in Iraq and it's pretty clear that a draft is nowhere near being necessary.
