What would you do? (Career question)

Alright heres the deal. I work for a fair sized company (approx 160 employees currently) and am fairly high up on the food chain. Im the supervisor for about 150-155 of those people.
Well, I found out today that the company is being bought out on FRIDAY. The buyer wants to downsize the company and only keep the top 60 employees (obviously im included), and the rest are getting laid off. I have the choice of going with the new company or taking a lay off.
If I get laid off, I can work online full time. Currently I make enough online to pay all my bills, so my "real" job is just fun money. Its pretty nice. However I know that if I worked full time online I'd have alot more money to play with too, its just not guaranteed.
Would you guys go with the new company and risk not liking it? Or just say fuck it and start online fulltime?

Its going to suck either way. The company pays for half the lease on my 2002 Chev Sonoma aswell as insurance, fuel and any repairs.

Try not to give opinions that are TOO biased either. Going full-time online is a huge step for me if I decide to do it. Basically I have until the 31st to figure it out.

I'd say before you go full time online, you make sure you can pay everything you need. Don't jump ahead, and try to make it on your living you have now with all the online, unless you know for sure, you'll always beable to make the bills or what not! Just my

Well, I make enough now to survive and pay all my bills (its close). But I know I could make more if I had more time online.
Im just afraid I wouldnt be motivated if I didnt have a "real" job and I would slack off. I know whenever I have days off its hard to motivate myself to work on the websites instead of going out drinking or sleeping or whatever.
For those of you who are just going to push the "you have so much more freedom if you work for yourself" stuff....dont bother.
In my position in the company I have all the freedom I could ever want. I make my schedule. I decide what days I work, and what hours. I have a little pressure to work a certain amount, but its still up to me. I think I've taken something like 16-18 WEEKS paid vacation in the last 2 years. When Im at work, I run the company. Everyone answers to me more or less. So its a tough decision for me to make.
Im also extremely loyal to all my employees as their hard work pays my wage, and none of them know the company is being bought and they are losing their job. Im not going back to work until all this is settled because I cant face them and not spill the beans.

If you'r a fool -> go fulltime online. Seems like you got a steady job and you got your back covered with that corporate job. Just keep doing what you're doing for the moment. What happens if after 5 years you can't sell porn anymore? Want to go back and do corporate after that? Forget it...

Listen to yourself. You got the job you've always wanted and you like your job. Why change it? Want to sit behind a pc 12 hours/day building porn sites? If you know how to outsource and run a big program i'd go for it. If your just going to build stuff... get the fuck out!

Its far from the job I always wanted. It supplies me with what I need right now, but I do feel like Im stuck. I dont feel like I can go any higher up in the company. Theres even the chance that I may take a demotion for the new company, I really dont know yet.
I LOVE my job, but I absolutely hate a few of the people I work with, and I want more money. Im very under paid when you consider my responsibilities within the company..

I'm in a simular situation with the difference that my employer is going belly up so I did not have the choice you have to make.

I have been doing this successfull for 2 years now and now went full time with it and I must say it's great.

Money's good I have more time to spend on my family and nobody tells me what to do but me.

I can't say you should do this or you shouldn't just wanted to share my experience it might help you reach a decision easier

Unless you get a big severence (two months or more) stick it out.

Start looking for a new job. This is a great time to move, since potential employers will not think your reasons are negative.

Indicate you are ambitious, a go getter, and the new downsized company does not fit with your personal goals. You mind land a great new job.

In the meantime, park the social life a bit, and closer to fulltime on your internet stuff. See how it goes.

In three months, hopefully you will have enough experience to make the best decision.

The things that have worked best for me over the past 30-odd years have been the things I knew without a doubt were going to work. It didn't matter if they were off the wall or if I had no reason for such optimism.

Whenever I have needed to make objective or logical decisions, I have more often been wrong and the benefits were always relatively minor. Thus if you are uncertain to the point that you are asking strangers for advice, my advice would be to stick with your job for now.

here is the way to do things if I was you

first you can always leave that job but if you leave now I doubt you will be able to get back in quick (even thou im sure your the best thing since sliced bread blah blah blah)

So I would say when you earn 3 months in a row twice what you earn at the offline job then quick.

But here is a few things you should be careful about:

If you online income is only from 1 source DO NOT QUIT

If you make your money from SE only DO NOT QUIT

If all your income is from PPS programs DO NOT QUIT

In other words make sure your online income comes from different sources and ways

If you can create your own schedule at your work, why not slowly take a day or two off every week? During your day off start working harder online, see if you like it better. If more money starts coming in from your websites, take even more days off. When you finally get to the point were you know you can do very well online, give them notice and your problems solved.

Lately I've been taking 4 days/week off already ;) The problem is I like to play on my days off. That and travel.
Lately I've been working 4 days on, then 4 days off. Doesnt work very well though because weekends are the busiest and its when im needed the most. I've had the last 3 weekends off I dunno. I guess I'll see what the new company offers me then go from there.

i'm in the same situation exactly, the only diffrence - i can work at my offline job as usual for the next few years.

First you say that you're afraid you wouldn't be motivated if you didn't have a "real" job and that you may slack off.

It seems to me that you're afraid that if you don't have a boss you won't be able to keep up the pace that's necessary to succeed. If this is the case, don't ignore this!

I'm the same way, I like having someone to work with that depends on me working.

If I were you, what I'd do is find someone to partner up with in the adult business.. and keep my job until I have something good going.

There is no such thing as job security, as you're finding out yourself, it doesn't make any difference if you work for someone else or for yourself.

My advice to you is to pay attention to what you've said your drawbacks are and take them into consideration when deciding what to do.

I'd have quit already when my online income was adequate to survive on. I hate working for people though so maybe that's why.

I enjoy the uncertainty of being self employed as well.. even if it means saving up a big reserve fun incase shit happens.

Paul summed it up right there, there is no harm in getting your resume out in front of a few headhunters right now, what is the worse thing that happens, you interview, you ask for more than what you are getting now, and they accept it?

If I had to choose. I would stay at the current job, not all webmasters have medical and or dental insurance, and it sounds like the company you work for give you that. After all you will never know when you do need that medical or dental.

What is wrong with working both jobs your main job and your online job?

Go with the new company for now. You can always quit later. It's good to have something to fall back on in case the bottom drops out of whatever you are doing online.

I would stick with it. You like your job, it's not like you are on the bottom of the food chain so you are doing well, why mess with it. Keep working online pt and keep your other job. If it ends up not being something that you enjoy then you should consider leaving and going to online work ft, but until then why change?

I mean I go to school every day and I do my online shite, a few years back I was only making 20-50$ a day, now it's much more

not because I spend more time online, but because I am slowly progressing with the knowlege I gain here
