America celebrates 50 years of DESEGREGATION: Good thing or bad thing?

50 years ago this year, the US Supreme Ct decided the landmark case Brown v Board of Education which outlawed the segregation of blacks from whites.

What are your thoughts about the consequences of this decision and is America a stronger, better, and happier place because of it?

My vote would, obviously, be yes!

desegregation my ass
more like the power for minorities to segregate themselves while still having the opportunity to be included in everything else.

Very valid point. Example: Okay to have a Black Student Union... fucked up and racist if someone forms a White Student Union.

Yup yup. They segregate themselves, and the "majority" put up with it. Another good example is BET (Black Entertainment Television). Can you IMAGINE if there was a station called "White Entertainment Television" that only had white people on it? There would be RIOTS.
Theres still segregation, it just seems like its starting to be the other way around.

What do you think about the explanation for such behavior as just "cultural expressions of solidarity"?

Oh I honestly believe thats the case. I dont think they are segregating themselves as some sort of superiority complex. But do you honestly think the minorities would allow the majority to get away with doing the same? Not a chance in hell.
Im just saying theres a double standard.

Yes, there is a very big double standard.

Ever wondered how Chris Rock can get away with telling black jokes but if a white guy said the same shit, he'd have his testicles stapled to his eyelids?

pls explain why it's 'laughable' -- ethnic expressions of culture weren't exactly lionized back in the 1800s.

Yeah but thats the world we live in. I dont imagine it will get any better before it gets worse. Theres really no solution. Anyone who tries to do anything about it will just get labelled as racist or whatever.

The only people I think should be segregated in classrooms are kids who are incorrigible and uncontrollable.

I have really young cousins and my nieces live with me and all of them at one time or another have had to live through an entire year at school where 1 kid in the classroom pretty much terrorized it.

The teacher spent most of her time dealing with the disruptive student instead of educating the rest.

Fucking pussy ass hippies and their whole pc existent is fucking up this country.

We're creating nothing but a bunch kids who will be the world's future outsourced labor when America turns into a 3rd world country sometime in the next 50 years.

I think its fine but racism is still so overstated today. White men are made out to be devils and if you find a liberal like Joe Citizen he will find every possible justification for this kind of anti-White double standards. Equality has never truly existed, and it sure as hell won't ever exist in my opinion.

Despite the years of affirmative action programs and continued slide of Whites into a minority even to this day 'minorities' are continually 'empowered' by these self proclaimed intellects. They are taught to stick together culturally and racially, and yet at the same time White men (particularly) are discouraged from any kind of ethnic solidarity, but instead made out to be devils from the past.

People are too idealistic. In my opinion and we are building our societies on very unstable blocks. Trying to promote equality, and a sense that ethnicity does not matter at all, yet at the same sending contradictory messages to 'minorities' within our own nation.

True. I think the only way to get a truly "equal" world everyone just needs to completely ignore minorities and majorities. If race doesnt play ANY role at all, then we will all be equal. Minorities banding together has the opposite effect. Eventually everyone will just clash again.

The 50s and 60s weren't that long ago. There are still people alive who lived and suffered under and remember Jim Crowe laws. There are still racists everywhere. White and black. I think as more white and black kids grow up together white/black racism will decrease with every generation until it's a thing of the past except perhaps for a tiny minority. I also think those who push for affirmative action will only slow down that process. We have to remember though that it hasn't been that long since black people attained equal rights.

Geez, how old are you? The 50's and 60's werent that long ago? Try 45-55 years ago. Thats a damn long time ago.
Growing up together doesnt make people tolerant of each other.

Bill Cosby was anything but politically correct in his remarks Monday
night at a Constitution Hall bash commemorating the 50th anniversary
of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. To astonishment, laughter
and applause, Cosby mocked everything from urban fashion to black
spending and speaking habits.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic people are not holding up
their end in this deal," he declared. "These people are not parenting.
They are buying things for kids -- $500 sneakers for what? And won't
spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.' . . .

"They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English," he
exclaimed. "I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you
ain't,' 'Where you is' . . . And I blamed the kid until I heard the
mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. . . . Everybody knows
it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. . . . You
can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!"

The Post's Hamil Harris reports that Cosby also turned his wrath to
"the incarcerated," saying: "These are not political criminals. These
are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the
back of the head over a piece of pound cake and then we run out and we
are outraged, [saying] 'The cops shouldn't have shot him.' What the
hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?"

When Cosby finally concluded, Howard University President H. Patrick
Swygert, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and NAACP legal defense fund
head Theodore Shaw came to the podium looking stone-faced. Shaw told
the crowd that most people on welfare are not African American, and
many of the problems his organization has addressed in the black
community were not self-inflicted

I'm 27. 45-55 years ago isn't that long ago considering there are still many people alive who remember that time very well. I disagree that growing up doesn't make people more tolerant of each other. I wonder how many "wiggers" were around before desegregation. As we get further and further from that time period I think race relations will improve.

Alright, you dress, walk, talk and act like a "wigger" and walk through compton yelling "Hey G, whaddup Dog?" and see how tolerant they are of you.
Copying someone doesnt eliminate conflict between races.

I think our country is definitely a better place because of it...although it's sad that it took until the 1950's and 60's for our country to even make those changes.

Yup. And those who are minorities and racist usually try to get away with things by calling everyone else racist.
I've had people at work call me racist because I was giving them shit for not doing their job. I just laughed and told them if I was racist there wouldnt be any employees working for the company because 90% are minorities.
