Just reading that over 100 Million call attempts aren't going through every time they do the voting on American Idol.

If they added a paid 900 number on there, not only would they get a fairer vote with more calls getting through, but also make millions of dollars every night from the hundreds of thousands of viewers that would gladly pay a premium just to be sure their vote is counted.

I've said this as well
go pay per call

but problem is they're better off this way as there is a sense of urgency and and they can brag about the number of calls (which impresses advertisers)

They are making a lot more from fan loyalty. That's like saying Consumption Junction should charge a couple of dollars a month. I'd kill my fan base.

MTV tried using 900 numbers years ago to vote for top videos and the system failed.

I did the MTV Hot or Not? version of American Idol LOL. We started off with a boy band type singer in LA who had some potential, shot a music video for him and then hooked up with MTV to run the spots.

After the calls started slamming in, he called and said how was it looking so far. I had to say I've got great news and bad news. The good news is were making a ton of 900 calls, the bad news is 99% of the people are voting NOT! He flipped out on us and MTV and said he was going to sue us all for ruining his music career forever.

We dropped the project after that. MTV thought there'd be too much liability associated with it that could indeed really impact people's careers.
