WASHINGTON - BellSouth Corp., the third-largest U.S. local phone company, on Thursday said it would offer an Internet-based telephone service for businesses to replace traditional central phone lines.

The company said the new system, known as Centerx IP, would offer businesses more flexibility than their current systems. With voice over Internet protocol, or VOIP, BellSouth said companies can track calls, switch numbers easily and integrate their phone systems with their computer network, allowing features such as voice messages sent through e-mail.

BellSouth said it would use Lucent Technologies Inc. equipment to provide its services.

VOIP services for home consumers has emerged as a threat to the established businesses of the Baby Bells, offering lower prices for unlimited phone calls. Verizon Communications Inc. has said it would launch a consumer VOIP service by June, and a BellSouth spokesman said the company was testing some VOIP services that could be aimed at consumers as well.

38 bucks for unlimited long distance throughout the USA and Canada. I used to have a traditional line, but was racking up high bills and wasn't using it nearly as close to the amount I use Vonage.

Plus, when travelling, if you bring your ATA (which is small), you can plug into any cable modem or DSL and use the phone.
