virus protection/firewalls

I have running Norton 2002... which is no longer supported (yet they take my $ for Live updating). Their last update to the firewall blocks all internet access.

Kind of annoys me but time to install a new version.

What is the best virus protection/firewall suite out there? Norton or McAfee? Both seem to be the same price.

I hate internet security suites.. too much crap I dont need.

I use f-prot for my antivirus (someone on here recommended it.. thanks for that! great antivirus protection in 3 megs of ram) and Zonealarm Pro for a firewall.

Installing virus checkers and software firewalls on your hard drive is passé.

For one, they slow a machine down.
For two, the newer virii just attack them first and render them useless.
Software firewalls are a false sense of protection...they can not stop
you from clicking on virus infected files. Software firewalls only assist
in informing you of inbound or outbound Trojans. If the Trojan got on
there in the first place it means you either don't update often from
Microsoft or you fuck around with pirate software and haven't the
sense to scan it first before clicking on it. Software firewalls also slow
a machine down.

To be protected properly these days you need to...
  1. Do not click on email attachments
  2. Ensure you have all critical updates from Windows Update
  3. Buy a router
  4. If you have Windows XP Pro/Home, turn on the firewall
  5. If you feel you must pirate software then scan with CA's
(Mcafee's mother company) online scanner before you click
    on the *.zip or *.exe
    http://www3.ca.com/threatinfo/virusinfo/scan.aspx
First visit will produce the Microsoft security warning popup, CA needs
to install a Java applet to allow the interface to work within the web page.
This is one of the rare times you say Yes to the security
warning popup. The only other one I can think of is first visit to Windows
    Update.
There are other online scanners but CA does it best.
  6. Pay attention to the security warning popup within WindowsXX
operating systems. It's there to warn you that something is trying to install
via ActiveX. Say No to the security warning popup unless your at
CA's online virus scan or Windows Update.

Wilbur is correct...installing an AV suite or firewall on the HD is futile at best...

AVG for the AV...and as for the firewall issue...LinkSys has broadband routers for under 50 bucks...with built-in firewall.

and last (but not least) make sure you have the adware/spyware proggies installed...

Adaware, Spybot S & D, and spywareguard.

hth...
