Would You Pay $104 Million For This?

Picasso's 1905 painting "Boy with a Pipe" sold for $104 million Wednesday at Sotheby's, breaking the record for an auctioned painting.

Painted in 1905, the work of art is now the most expensive painting ever sold at auction.

The previous record was set by Vincent van Gogh's 1890 "Portrait of Doctor Gachet," which was sold to a Japanese billionaire for $82.5 million in 1990 at Christie's.

A 24-year-old Picasso painted "Boy with a Pipe" soon after settling in Montmartre, France. It depicts a young Parisian boy holding a pipe in his left hand and wearing a garland of flowers. John Hay and Betsey Whitney bought the painting in 1950 for $30,000.

OMG $100 Mil for a fucking piece of canvas, some oil paint, and a wood frame.

Picasso must be laughing his ass off upstairs.

Just proves the ultra wealthy are also some of the biggest suckers.

Sothebys made an $11 Million commission on the sale.

I wonder what his reasons for buying it were? Is it an investment or is he just an art lover? Or is he just trying to outdo his other rich friends?

i'm not saying the picasso is worthless.
i recognize the value of it.

i'm simply saying there are better uses for that money.

even if i could easily afford a $104 million painting, i would not buy it.

Ive seen many PIcassos, and although the value is astronomical, until youve stood and looked at Guernica or any other great Picasso, those figures are so small.

Ive hung Basquiats, Koontz, Warhols, and lichtensteins (2 mil+)Even had to adjust the humidity control on works. Art is better than religion. And its value is worth every penny.

Actually you can't compare the two. One is for business which will create jobs for people.

The painting will just hang in someone's home.

Big difference Quiet.

i agree that they are different. but i don't agree with what you've said.

the painting is likely a very safe investment, that will end up making money in the very long term. an investment just like any other.

not trying to say anything about your biz model, which looks amazing

i find it hard to believe you don't know what i'm talking about (it's so bloodly obvious)

I've always sort of thought of domain names as internet real estate. Especially if you have a good one.

Oh I agree on that point. No doubt in our lifetime paintings will go over $200 Million now.

Art is a great investment in most cases.

what happened to buying high priced items for the publicity?

Todd McFarlane is know now for HIGH BIDDING on baseballs, even has a museum of them.

Recently I watched the videos of him bidding on the Mark McGuire baseball. Dont quote me, but over tyhe phone and after a very stressful bid war, it was in the range of 2.6 million???

After hen hung up the phone, he looked towards his manager team and said, "you better make this worth it" - and they PROMPTLY replied, "oh its gonna be worth it, very worth it"

next thing it flashed to was the HEADLINES all across the US and THE WORLD, that the ANONYMOUS BIDDER on the Mark McGuire ball was non other than Todd McFarlane, he wantesd to brand his SPAWN name and he is one of the BEST marketers out there now.

i like guys like that.

then again, i'm not a millionaire ;)

read the article on yahoo though. the painting was purchased in 1950 for $30K. it was kept as a luxury item until the death of it's owners. the estate auctioned it off.

i will bite my tongue however on this. when i made my original post, i was thinking more a long the lines of charitable actions. but the article says the proceeds are going to the Greentree Foundation, an enviromental organization.

i still think people are too greedy though. someone who can afford to buy a painting for $104 million doesn't really need to worry about potential investments. he/she could do better things, in my opinion, with their money. they could even start a company with charitable goals in mind and try to make it profitable.

personally, that's the type of shit i'd do if i had that kinda money.

but i don't.

Art is an investment, no different than buying an expensive house, a corporation, or anything else tha tappreciates in value. I guarantee you that the next time that painting sells, it will go for over $200 million.

Nobody is rich enough to buy that just because he likes the painting.. Tha would be unreal

I don't think any painting is worth that much cash.
But there are some stupid rich people out there who do stupid things with thier cash.

Agree totally with you there. It's worth every penny.
I own several paintings worth £35,000+ each, and although small fry compared to Picasso or other great names, I would rather have these to look at every day than sell a few and buy another Porsche.

Monet, Picasso, and other great impressionists are worth the money because they are so great. Owners will never loose money over investing in them, and $104 million is small change the the people that won the auction.

Lemme just check my bank account.

Hmm... perhaps a bubble gum joe cartoon would look nice on my wall instead.
