That's one pricey peice of canvas, what I wonder will it go in a vault or on a wall! If the buyer puts it on his wall or in his collection to admire then it is worth it for him.

Some people have way too much money, bastards:-)

It might sound mean or whatever, but it's survival of the fittest. That's what happens to an area that can't sustain it's population. And suppose you don't believe that, that's ok, most foreign aid ends up in the hands of corrupt government officials, so sending money to Africa is a huge waste, since most of the people never see the money or any benefits.

Poverty is all relative..

I wouldn;'t say people have it JUST as bad, last time I checked there were more people dying of starvation, aids & civil war in Africa than in the rest of the world put together

make sure you donate it to the right organisations or set up your own fund..

I understand that a lot of money is also being spend on salleries (people who work there need some income too ofcourse)
, but if everybody has that attitude nothing will change for the better

These people need to be educated as well in order to "sustain it's population" if i may quote you on that one

I am really glad that we're talking about this in a civil manner (Not sarcasm, I can't remember when the last time was a debate of any kind went on for more than one post without childish namecalling and accusations). Anyway, I would never send a dime of my money to Africa. Just because I see war veterans who have come back after serving this country who now have nothing. I see homeless people sleeping on the beach and on bus benches in Waikiki every night. Sure, maybe some of them are alcoholics or drug addics that are that way because of their own malfeasance, but it is my belief that once you help people over here who could actually contribute something to society, then eventually others will be better off as well. I mean, so you help some people from Africa, then what? Africa does not really contribute anything to anyone, at least in America people could get back on their feet and get jobs that will produce something that will eventually benefit society. Sorry if I was rambling, it's late here.

You think that's bad?

Check out the US Treasury's "Debt To The Penny" page.

This number blows my mind.

You're right on that. The dictators that run the countries down there scoop up the aid money and send it to their Swiss banks.

I don't think the impoverished parts of Africa are saveable. You have terrible agriculture, so you can' t even grow food there.

They really need to relocate the population.

Buying a painting has nothing to do with poverty. If you spend 100 bucks on a concert someone could argue that you could have fed 40 hungry people.

If you want to help then send all your money to charity.

Many people who are wealthy donate to charity and buy paintings. I don't see how one has anything to do with the other.

It's a genuine Picasso! Market value is determined in part by what people will pay for it. If someone is willing to pay that kind of money for it, then that's what it worth.

I would bet that the value goes up over time; its a pretty solid investment.

Some authentic monet oil paintings are valued at similar prices.

it's one thing to say something is worth $104 million or $90 million or $450 million. but if the item never sells for that price, it's worth sweet fuck all.

100%. That's exactly what I am talking about, when assessing something's value, a large component of is what people are willing to pay for it.

Think of the stock market. When the price of a stock fluctuates, its not because the companies' assets fluctuate (usually), the price fluctuation is a reflection of demand, of what people are willing to pay for it.

some people are willing to spend 500k on a car, others are willing to spend 40million on a house, some spend crazy money on buying a company as an investment.

If Art is what makes you tick, and having that picture in your living room makes you happy, I say go for it.

Just because you cant put yourself in their shoes doesnt mean they're retarded for wanting to buy it.

I read a lot of ignorance around...

PICASSO - One of the masters of the world's history... That painting is ONE in a lifetime.. There is only ONE in the world.. ONE !!!

It is not like anything else.. Some of you guys need to take some art classes.. and ask why paintings are so expensive.

I can find many other ways to spend that much money.. but hey that was their choice wasn't it?

buying stuff like that for people who can afford it is always a great investment, think about it

I decorate my house and anything i buy and bring home is pretty much worthless (value) after it leaves the store I mean your everyday ordinary purchases we all make

But high end antiques and paintings seldom depreciate in value, they either stay near the same value or go up in value. So while alot of the spending habits seem the same relatively speaking to earnings...there everyday things ie cars, furniture, house, maintain a higher appreciation

you could feed a lot of kids from any country with that....but only for a little while

personally i think feeding the hungry is a bad idea...

helping others to be able to feed themselves is a better one

Acquiring, collecting, investing, enjoying...they all merge somewhere.

This painting might get the purchaser laid 407 times. Or when he dies, the profit from it might buy his kids a retail pizza chain. Or maybe this guy doesn't even like Picasso...but he really likes pipes. And he has billions, and this is just the most precious item you can purchase that relates to a pipe.

Without meeting the guy, you have no idea his intentions or reasoning. I don't see the beauty in that painting that makes it that valuable. But then again, they aren't making any more Picasso's...and especially big ones in perfect condition like this.

Blue Period is one of the best times in my opinion.

Guitar Player is one of my faves.

whoever the auction winner is, he/she is obviously extremely wealthy..

but look at it this way, by winning the artwork at that price, he now sets a standard for Picasso art prices..

what if the person already has 5 Picasso pieces in their possesion?

its an idea, not sure if its true.
