8megs of cache simply means it will be faster. But these days WD puts 8 megs on its "special" edition drive and they also carry 3 years of warranty instead of 1 The speed difference is not huge, but the warranty is nice.

![]() Get WD, only IBM is higher quality and they cost considerably more. Maxtor is better than it used to be, but it used to be complete garbage so .... If you will use this as a primary drive spring for the 8mb cache. If its secondary storage it doesn't matter.

Disk caching works under the same principle as memory caching, but instead of using high-speed SRAM, a disk cache uses conventional main memory. The most recently accessed data from the disk (as well as adjacent sectors) is stored in a memory buffer. When a program needs to access data from the disk, it first checks the disk cache to see if the data is there. Disk caching can dramatically improve the performance of applications, because accessing a byte of data in RAM can be thousands of times faster than accessing a byte on a hard disk.
8 Mb = more memory buffer |

Check your Sunday newspaper inserts -- pretty much on a weekly basis, Office Max, Best Buy, or Circuit City has rebate deals on the Western Digital 1200JB drives -- 120gb/8mb cache/7200rpm.
Office Max usually has the best rebates actually, bringing the price of the 1200jb drive down to around $59 after rebate. A very good drive for the price, and you won't find them for that price with any of the online retailers since mostly all of them sell the OEM and not the Retail packaging drives. I own about 10 of these drives for my PC's, Xbox, UltimateTV systems, etc... They're silent compared to some of the Seagate drives I've used, and the speeds are superior as well. Just my ![]()

go with 8meg over 2meg. 8 megs come with 3 year warrenty, 2 meg come with 1 year warrenty. Do you really want to buy something that they had to lower to a 1 year warrenty?
All hard drives USED to have a 3 year up untill about a year ago, and they realized that too many people were returning them within the 3 years b/c they would break. The 8 meg are the higher end drives, 2 meg are the disposable drives. Typically only a $10-30 difference between the two types at most computer stores. I like Western Digital b/c they are nice and quiet. ZoiNk

With the Circuit City rebates, there are usually two rebates - a store rebate, and then a manufacturer's rebate. Just have to read carefully what each rebate form needs -- like the manufacturer probably wants the actual UPC barcode from the retail packaging, while the store rebates are usually content with a photocopy of the UPC barcode. Just make sure to read the forms carefully and get the proper stuff in. I would probably venture a guess that's how they're able to even offer these fat rebates --- when they crunch the numbers, they probably figure the majority of customers either don't send the rebate in at all.... or send in the wrong stuff, which would nullify the rebate. It is kind of mind boggling how a $29 spindle of Imation CD-R's cost the consumer $0.00 after rebate. I mean after all, someone's picking up the tab... but who? Has to be a numbers game betting on most not sending in the rebate at all. Sorry to get off topic there ![]()
