All cars made for the US/Can market should have a max speed of 70mph

The speed limit in Canada is 100km/h
The speed limit in US is ~65mph

Therefore cars should be set to go no faster than 70mph and there would be no speeding tickets and fewer accidents (I personally do not believe that speed has a lot to do with the # of crashes.)

Discuss.

Btw, before ppl say something bout super cars are made for speed... Benz's go 155mph max for the north american market, even those with 450BHP +

Right, so how do you propose they do this? If the car is horsepower/drag limited to 70mph, it'll be piss ass slow to drive at lower speeds, and no one will buy it.

If it is electronically limited to 70mph, there'll be a chip on the market within days that everyone will install, just as there is now (a lot of new cars are limited to 110-120mph.

The problem is the speed limits - they were set many decades ago when that was the safe travelling speed for cars of that time. The problem is there has been no address of the power and handling of cars today in regards to safe operational speed. Anyways - speeding tickets are too much of a cash grab for the government anyway - they would never give up that source of income.

Agreed 100%, especially about tickets being to much of a cash grab to pass up.

Also, in the US the limit was lowered on hiways during the gas shortage, and never raised back up. Used to be 70 or 75 I believe.

LOL, not mine and I'm sure I'm not alone as I was not the first to visit Brabus or RENNTech, Carlsson, etc. That speed governor has nothing to do with safety...for a while there was a 'gentleman's agreement' between BMW Porsche
and Mercedes that they would limit to 155mph.. kind of an effort to get the greenies off their backs...also has to do with aerodynamics (specifically downforce needed to keep a car pinned to the ground at certain speeds)...it's called lift.

Anyway, I'll think about your 70mph limits tonight while cruising at 157mph bouncing off my governor in the M5

its just bullshit...you have to go 80-100 on the freeway just to not get ran over..but hell a cop needs to make a quota he picks from whatever he wants. It sucks.

The TransCanada goes up to 110km/h at least.

Yeah, driving through Denver and LA were the worst for speeds that I found. Denver if you slowed to less than 75mph you would get tailgated or pushed off the road! It was bloody scary for a little Canadian girl like me in my little Tercel!

Maybe raise the speed limits, so people do respect them as "maximums" and not "suggested minimums".

Highest limit i've seen was 75 and that was between Phoenix and Tucson.

Most places are 65 or 70.

I couldnt agree more with you about making cars that go no faster then 100KPH. I dont know how many times I have gone into the funeral home ( Most of you know I work there also) and found a man/woman on my prep room table who went head first through their windshield at over 1ookph! Let me tell you what their head looks like...A CANTALOUPE MELON WHICH WAS DROPPED FROM THE CN TOWER....People need to slow down!

Screw speed limits. Here in FL, the limit is either 70 or 75 on "alligator alley" (interstate 75) and I've NEVER seen anyone going slower than 90 mph... the cops breeze past people at 100 without even flinching.

What they need to do is start RE-testing old people and being stricter about handing out DL's to begin with. Most accidents are the cause of reckless stupidness, not speed. (I think we've had 4 old people drive through buildings and run people down since the beginning of the year down here.)

True regarding testing and stupidity....and lets restructure the damn test too while were at it.

Next, I can't stand the mentality that everyone should be punished because some can't handle things the way they are...what bullshit. Lets take away alcoholic beverages from everyone on the planet because some people abuse them. Great mentality

Oh yeah, not blasting you with that last statement angeleyes

If there is, I havent been there. Montana posted a speed limit again a few years ago. I've been to alot of the US and have yet to find a state without a speed limit.
Elli your right though. Denver drivers definately dont follow the speed limits Colorado state troopers have some kickass vehicles to catch up though.
