WTF! Police Spy Cams In FL To Run Your Plates & Background Automatically

Big Brother has arrived. I think this raises some very serious constitutional issues. This is getting ridiculous. Once one agency does this, and then another and another, pretty soon your entire day's movements are being tracked by the government everywhere you go.

WTF???

Spy Cameras Track Drivers in Fla. Town

MANALAPAN, Fla. -- New technology will soon track drivers who pass by the waterfront mansions of this ritzy oceanside town, checking their backgrounds to find wanted criminals and following up on those who are nearby when a crime occurs.

Cameras will snap pictures of drivers, their cars and their license plates and a computer will run the tag against a criminal database. If anything suspicious is found, a dispatcher can call police.

Still, the cameras are raising concerns about privacy because they follow the movements of innocent drivers, such as those going to the beach.

The technology "subjects every citizen and visitor to a state police check -- without probable cause or even any basis for suspicion," said Howard Simon, executive director of Florida's American Civil Liberties Union.

He said the cameras are another example of government agencies placing more public spaces under high-tech surveillance without enacting any laws to protect the privacy of law-abiding citizens or to ensure the accuracy of new technology.

well why dont these people in these "ritzy mansions" have their own camera security that checks their grounds and runs a check on everyone coming on their property...
protecting the extremely wealthy and not the rest of the citizens.. sounds a little biased to me.

Yep, exactly what I was thinking. This isn't the type of thing government needs to be involved in.

This is a valid point also. Why aren't they checking in the crap neighborhoods.

The worst part of this placement is that its on A1A which is the main tourist road and the only primary north and south seaside road in Palm Beach County. If you drive up along the ocean you will be driving right through this town and get your picture taken, your car picture taken, and your license plate picture taken.

What if you are driving late at night and a burglary happens in the area. Now you will automatically become a suspect. That's fucked up.

Plus what if you drive this road daily. The government will be checking your background records every day. That is insanely intrusive.

It's unfortunate but I think it's becoming too late for privacy rights. Privacy is dead.

Privacy is one thing, but this goes beyond that. Its no different then police having checkpoints and that has been ruled unconstitutional.

Sounds like a perfect place to set up some boothes selling trash bags (for the plates) and goofy looking Bush clown masks... on both ends of this camera zone.

The funny things is... if you have your OWN cameras and don't live in a ritzy house, you're usually suspected of being a dealer.

Yep, privacy is dead.

Tons of ISP's, etc etc etc,... all owned by them. They determine what you think, feel, and how you interact with the world.

This is america.

You are being watched. There is record of everything you have public available at someones fingertips. They judge you and make decisions about your life behind your back. The only correct power left in this country are true italians, perhaps some others *i.e. boondock saints types*.

There are also people who are so f ing full of it, I can smell them a mile away. They cant help being the way they are and they also cannot change. I happen to put great amounts of effort in many many lives to earn what I have. You truly need to earn it. Nobody can earn it for you. and nobody can help if you want a screaming chance in hell of finishing life and death.

Arguably, they probably are the ones paying for it since I would imagine they pay a good chunk of the taxes.

Either way, that is not something that should be put on public property. Hell, can a private security system even access a database with everyone's licence plates on demand?

Last I checked, Amendment 5 of the consitution goes as follows:

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

Obviously when this was written there were neither cars, licence plates, cameras, or much less cameras that could instantly conduct survelliance on the public.

Hate to burst your bubble but if you haven't noticed it's the rich who run the country.

They pay the most in political contributions so they have the most clout. Now come election time the politicians will be out pressing hands of the poor working classes, but as soon as they have their votes it's back to normal.

Same whether you live in the US, UK, EU or on the dark side of the moon. It's called democracy.

Anyway, CCTV in the UK has cut down on muggings, street crime, caught murderers and many criminals, not to mention slowing down drivers and cutting the number of road deaths. Is it worth having your picture taken in a mall if it helps stop someone kidnapping a child?

You havent been down this stretch of road obviously, the mansions are astromnomical and the security is high. what I dont understand is why isnt this same security being offered to those that have to deal with breakins..if its government ruled.. it should not be for the wealthy only, the wealthy are not the only one paying taxes..

I have nothing to hide.. so the fact that they would run secuirty checks on me wouldnt bother me.. but I would hate to be accused of something i didnt do because they think i was at the scene..

If someone is going to be breaking into those homes, they arent going to be some crack head driving by .. it will be a high tech well planned out robbery..IMO

I just believe in equality of the citizens.. not a bad thing

LOL - that'd be funny though if the plates of the car they took had a "wanted" hit on them also.

Well obviously the people who installed the cameras think different. My post was meant to be irony, trust me I'm with you on just placing them by mansions. But reality is something else.

In Florida, before police can conduct a checkpoint they are required to notify the news media ahead of time and the checkpoints location has to be published before hand.

Fucking A, I feel sorry for the people in FL. I will never move or no longer in a place that has cameras like that that track every move you make.

If it comes down to it, I'll leave the fucking states. It's the mark of the beast for all those that are relegious!

Then the day we have microchips, that'll be even worse!

So what needs to happen is a bunch of poor to middle class people in florida should drive through that neighborhood 1000 cars deep. Park whenever/wherever legally possible. Walk around the neighborhood (it's a free country no?) and just annoy the fuck out of the people in the neighborhood (by being there) until they agree to take down their spy cams.

Protest.
