Spammers in jail, stopping people from smoking in their cars, cause thats too dangerous. Why isnt the government spending enormous amounts of money to create indestructable cars or something.

Spammers should not be in jail. They should be dangling from a noose.

Well, if i had a solution, i wouldnt be slinging porn, but 2500 people died on sept 11 and the US has been at war ever since, why not put some of that effort into saving half those 40000 people.

The only thing the goverment can do is make everyone drive the same size car, no SUV, Trucks etc. It would drop the death total so much. But then again that would take our freedom away.

Tanks are a good idea, but road rage would escalate to whole new levels.

In 2003, more than half of those killed in passenger vehicles were not wearing safety belts. Forty percent of all fatalities, or 17,401 deaths, were alcohol-related, essentially unchanged from 2002.

Ok, what about cars that wont start unless you have your seatbelt on and blow into a breathalizer. I wouldnt want a car like that, but wow, thats alot of people dying.

Remove all drivers seatbelts, remove all drivers airbags and replace them with 12" metal spikes that retract if you get rear-ended...

That's an excellent suggestion. I wish they would create cars like that and make it mandatory.

It would make the roads so much safer. Also include a drug test though.

because car producers wouldn't allow it. There's just too much money to be made by repairing cars and producing new ones...

How about for starters fix the ruts on freeways.

And second. how about mandatory seat belts in all states along with breathilizer tests required to be installed on all people 16-25 and all people with a DUI on record?

I mean really, cmon..... the government can make some pretty damn sophisticated equipment which couldn't be fooled. ... and in reality, it would cost their high end producers only a few dollars. No need to make profit on a public service to save peoples lives.

I dont know why the gov't is against this type of thing. Anyone have a loved one/someone you cared about greatly die? Have you even ever cared about someone? those that know don't even need to reply, and im sorry if i've brough back your emotions by reading this.

This is not trivial.

I can uderstand DWI, cellphones, and even smoking, because it may couse the death of another, but with seat belts you are only hurting yourself. (unless you fly through the windshield)
My father was killed because he was not wearing his, yet I am an advocate for personal rights.

everyone wants to compare this to the war in IRAQ.. well if we did'nt go to war and the DUNE COONS had their way they would kill at least 40,000 A DAY! so lets not compare war to automobile accidents . opposing drivers are not the same as Iraqs soliders were or the Taliban! geez people!

Transportation is the bloodline to any economy. The benefits that millions of people receive now and in the future far outweigh the tragic accidents that occur because of it. Sad to see a majority of you, in this day and age, do not see that and still fall for every day media hype.

The answer to the original question is simply that we don't care about other people and we really are not very rational creatures. Thus we get positively warm and fuzzy at the prospect of dropping bombs on bits of the globe most of us could not even locate. And we couldn't give a damn if there is annual carnage on our roads.

But we are conditioned to be patriotic (and to equate government with country) and we are conditioned to value "freedom" above all else: even common sense. So we don't see anything strange in claiming to care about 3,000 deaths at the hands of terrorists while not sparing a second thought for the thousands more killed year in and year out on our roads. We pay for wars with barely a moment's hesitation, but get outraged at the prospect of paying for better roads or more thorough policing. We sit quietly back while the Patriot Act strips away our most basic rights, but grumble and often ignore laws about seat belts, cell phone use, drinking to excess, etc.

And of course the demon media helps us be this way. All but the worst accidents are just not news, while even the rumor that something has a terrorist connection is enough to put it on the front pages.

Here's another statistic for you: an estimated 100,000 people a year die in US hospitals, because of infections they contract while in hospital, incorrectly prescribed medication, etc. In other words, most should not have died. It's easy enough to find information like that, but you do have to look for it. Just as we get the government we deserve, we get the media we deserve. They know what makes us stay tuned and what makes us start channel hopping.

To take this even further away from being just another Iraq spinoff, does anyone ever stop to wonder just how much parents' apparent care and affection for their children is really worth? Mom sticks a Band-Aid on a graze while ignoring the second-rate education her kids are getting? Dad loves his children enough to buy them expensive birthday presents, but not enough to make sure they will have jobs when they are older or air to breathe. "There's nowt as quare as folk".

I have become a more patient and defensive driver the past few years after seeing one too many accidents over the years. I am amazed how many people get in the cars and take out their stress and aggression with their cars. Instead of being a vigilante and teaching them a lesson, now I just smile and turn the music up.

Half the fatalities are due to people not wearing seatbelts.

The average cost per fatality of a car accident in the US is approx $1million.

How would you spend the $1billion you could save by reducing fatalities by 25%?

How many people here whining about the govt. "fixing" this problem would bitch twice as loud if the govt.
stopped allowing sports cars?
changed max. speed limit to 40?
installed breathalizers on all cars?
(btw, my mom would fail every fucking day with the amount of mouthwash she uses walking out the door to go to work )

If the govt. even attempted to do ANY of these things, these same people would be bitching about their constitutional rights! (as they should)

Sure, it is sad, but the govt. doesn't OWE you a protective fucking bubble to live in happy and healthy for your entire lives! Get over it!

You really do swallow that "FEAR" BS that GWB is putting out. How many US soldiers, not invading Iraq, did the Iraqi soldiers kill?

You make cars "safer" people drive them faster, you give kids licenses, cars and ask them to be responsible, not to mention pensioners. The driving test in the US is a dream and needs to be toughened.

I literally SEE car wrecks about 2-3 times a week on the turnpike here in Florida. I saw one as it happened on Monday but there wasn't much I could do because I was boxed in between a bunch of cars going 80mph, but I did call 911 right away.

I refuse to get in a war debate on this board, but I will answer this question.

Zero...they are cowards, they raped, tortured, and killed innocent men, women, and children instead.

I'm assuming those are international numbers? Cause if 380000 people die from starvation this week, we got a serious problem.

Frankly, you cant compare north america to north africa or china.

But good points have been made, their would be an outcry if govt tried to impose anything. I guess i'll just do my part by staying off the roads.
