Wasn't the idea of backlinks and all a published project that started at Stanford or something?

I'll have to actually read their claims in that patent some day.

you can make your own SE and use the google database though can't you? I've seen lots of google clones out there.

Google would either need to be able to serve their ads, or you would have to license access to the database...

I'm talking about starting your own 500-linux-box-army search engine that would actually compete with Google.

But I don't think you can. I think they might have it all locked up now.
