It's that hard.

It's not that hard. Check OLGA for guitar tab's, there is some lessons too so you can learn by your self. I did!

As a former guitar teacher I will tell you .. if you are lazy don't bother.

It takes hard work and a while to get good. Don't pick it up unless you can practice every day and don't mind starting with boring shit.

You don't NEED lessons .. but I recommend them. A teacher can give you invaluable recommendations, provide critisism and help you avoid bad habits which would make playing more difficult in the future.

I own a few guitars that used to belong to famous rockstars that you've all heard of. Up until a year ago, I couldn't play a fucking chord. Thankfully, I spent 12 years playing piano while growing up...so I was able to learn the chords pretty easily with the knowledge on how to read music.

I used a site, forget what it was called. The guy kicked ass. He was like your own personal teacher. He has lessons upon lessons in downloadable clips that run like $10 per lesson. Do a search on google and he'll probably turn up.

In my opinion of "decent" you would look at about $400-$500. But you can get a guitar to start on for $100. Which you might want to do before you're sure if you'll stick with it.

Although a decent instrument doesn't hurt to learn on. You can always sell it if it doesn't pan out for you.

It's really not that hard.

Just learn the standard chords first... then pick a few songs you'd like to play, get tabs at www.ultimate-guitar.com. Most of the songs always have some of the standard chords in it. If there are a few chords you don't know, look 'em up until you know all, and you can play the song. That's how I've learned it

here's my guitar btw:

You can learn a couple basic guitar chords pretty easily. Just try to learn the basic open G, C, D first.

There are lots of different areas to go into after that.

But if you want to be good, you need to dedicated about 2000 hours to it. That can be done over a couple years..and you'll be rockin'.

Very good advice. I taught myself to play leads, but I never developed using my pinky finger to bend strings. Later on I made myself get into the habit of using my pinky. If I had learned how to play right in the first place I probably would have advanced much faster.

But playing guitar isn't all that difficult if you can get over a little initial pain, I started playing in 5th grade without any problems. My 11 year old son is learning to play bass guitar, he's already better than some grown-up bass players I know.

Learning guitar isn't really as hard as some people think. The problem is everybody gives up after a few days because they seem to be getting nowhere, but if you stick with, you will eventually start to notice improvement.

A good way to learn is with Guitar Pro. It's a pretty simple program that takes a tab and plays it back in midi. Sounds a bit lame, but it's great for getting a feel for the rhythm of a song, and you can slow the playback down as well, which is great for learning solos. Plus, if someone's tab is really fucked up, you'll be able to tell by hearing it, rather than trying to figure out if they were right and you just can't play.

You can get the demo off the site, or just get the whole thing off of your preffered p2p software. Then go here for tabs.

The important thing to remember is that you most likely WILL suck at first, so don't get pissed off and give up. Just stick with it and you'll be glad you did.

Depends on how good you want to be and how much effort you're prepared to put in. I used to practice 4 hours a day.

UG also has a vbulletin forum which is a good place to get help and advice on guitar.. I used to be a moderator there. It's overrun by teenagers now asking for relationship and sex advice .. but if you post in the right forums you can get some good input there.

I don't recommend learning by tabs though .. actually I don't recommend tabs at all. It's up to you obviously, but when I taught I refused to teach my students or help them with tabs. Standard notation ("sheet music") is the only way to go AFAIC.

Learning to play guitar is easy..you can learn 4 chords in an afternoon..

mastering the guitar is one of the most difficult challenges in music.

If you do give it a go,don't cheap through on the instrument. Most beginners make that mistake and end up quitting because it's too much on their fingers.I taught guitar for years and always mandated that new students start out on a nylon string classical.I preferred Takamini..

At lessons are very important.

Back in the day a friend of mine gave me lessons for like a year almost everyday in exchange for his website to be built and he was trained by Steve Vie and trained at LA' MIT.

The sad thing is that "The Grunge" sound came in and the true art of guitarr playin was lost.

Aint that a sign of fucked up times.
When Major labels turned to cheap labor for musicians that do not know shit about really playing an instrument.

Fuck Commercial Music and fuck the huge labels.

FUCK YOU VIRGIN, FUCK YOU GEFFEN, FUCK ALL YOU COrPORaTE FUCK ASS'es. YOU SUCK...

Its rumored that Eddie Van Halen has turned into a Hermit.

He does not go anywhere or do anything really but one thing he does do is play his stuff everyday everynight in his home studio.

Actually a lot of great guitarists were part of the Grunge scene. Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden and though a lot of people don't consider Kurt Cobain to have been a terrific guitarist I think he was actually quit accomplished.. you just have to look past "nevermind".

It's just the bi-product of grunge .. when all those "pop-punk" powerchord bands came out like Greenday etc.

Grunge itself was made up of a lot of bands who came right from the 80's hair rock genre.. Pearl Jam was actually an "80's rock band" (called "Mother Love Bone") before their lead singer passed away and was replaced by Eddie Vedder .. so a lot of the guitarists from that era were rather talented.

IF you devote one hour to pratice a day its not hard at all, thats playing guitar for your enjoyment. If you want to make a serious living at it, 8 to 14 hrs a day for pratice and be blessed with creative talent.

Teachers will help you understand musical theory, technique and how to read tabs/sheet music. It's not an insturment that is easy to pick up and play well. If you're looking for something a bit easier and you have good coordination, give drums a try. There are no musical notes to worry about and techniques can vary.

It's pretty easy unless you want to be Steve Vai.
I've been playing for about 10 years, never had a lesson. I started out just doing tab from simple songs and basic power chord stuff, really it's a piece of piss after the initial month of bad barre chords and spasmodic progressions.
While someone that practices 3 hours a day and has lessons every week will be better than me after a year solid (ha, probably even sooner), I don't really care for that sort of ability - ie hair metal lead breaks.
I can play pretty much anything I hear or want to and compose songs so thats enough for me.

you'll be surprised how after a month of tooling around you'll already be playing a few licks from you favourite songs (so long as your favourite songs aren't by al dimeola )

if you're lazy don't even bother. you have to love playing guitar. when i started playing i was about 15. i would play for hours everyday. i don't do it as much anymore, but it's alot like riding a bike. i'm just a little rusty.

but seriously it takes time dedication and love.

when you get it though.... there's no feeling like it. to just be able to play. it's a high of sorts.
