It is illegal to do that. its also illegal to carry one into the secured area of an airport, a place of worship, a school, a hospital, an amusement park, and any place with a sign that says firearms are prohibited.

i have to say - leaving your gun in the car is a BAD move. Bad enough when it's parked in your driveway (assuming it isn't parked in a locked garage) - But made even worse - if you only take it with you - at certain destinations but not at others.

Just seems like you're opening up possibilities for somebody to break into your car - and get ahold of your pistol.

Police patrol the streets. That's where they can stop people before violent crimes take place.
Nobody robs the airport cinnabon stand. Same concept.

We would have less people carrying guns around ready for an arguement (as someone in this thread said, almost hoping someone gives you a reason to use it) if it was more likely that the next time you got pulled over you could face a heavy sentance for posession of a concealed weapon.

IMO it should be treated like drunk driving.
Even going so far as to set up occasional roadblocks to search for weapons.
This would get guns out of the hands of gangs and criminals,
while leaving your right to defend your home unaffected.
There's no reason our muder rate couldn't be similar to other civilized nations.

But, have you ever seen a cop around when you need one? They cant be everywhere at once.

They don't need to be everywhere. They just need to check the streets often enough to discourage people from carrying weapons to public places. To prevent gangsters rolling with their crew from packing. Over time, a lot of criminals guns would be confiscated.

People who keep their guns at home are still protected.

I would exempt hunting rifles from this prohibition because there is a reason you need to transport them, and they cannot be easily carried around without alerting the world to the fact that you have a gun.

Poke around Packing.org and you will see the number of hoops someone has to jump through to get a CCW permit, its not like going to the gun store and picking out a Dirty Harry special and holstering it under your jacket.

There's a book written by John Lott called, More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun-Control Laws (Studies in Law and Economics) and to put it into 'Cliff Notes' form for you, and pardon the Amazon cut and paste job...

Professor Lott gathered data on crime from all counties in the United States for over twenty years and compares the data with the passage of concealed weapons legislation. The results are astounding. Lott conclusively shows, by controlling for a wide range of other possible causes, that it is the ability of law abiding citizens to carry concealed guns that leads to dramatic drops in crime in states that enacted these laws.

This occurence is perfectly logical. By increasing the probability that the potential criminal will face a negative result, (he will be shot with a gun) a risk averse potential criminal may well be deterred from engaging in criminal activity.

To put it simpler; if 1 in 20 people decide to carry a concealed handgun on their person, the potential criminal faces a 5% chance that he will face a victim that will be able to defend himself quite adequately. The reduction in crime, as expected, increases as the number of citizens carrying concealed hanguns increases.

Funny thing, I live within walking distance from the murder capital of the U.S., (Chicago had 599 murders in 2003, down from 648 a year earlier and the first time since 1967 that the total dipped below 600) yet the mayor and the governor don't belive law-abiding citizens should be able to carry concealed.

Ask me if I feel safe and secure walking the streets at night unarmed, would you feel secure knowing those stats?

I live on an Island state of Australia that suffered the biggest massacre by a lone gun man in the recorded history of the world a few years ago.

Needless to say we have really strict gun laws and as a result no one I know carries a gun. Which is very in keeping with this place because we have the cleanest air and water in the world and more protected wilderness than the whole of the U.S.. It is paradise and guns would just fuck it up.

i wouldnt mind having one, for in the home...but not to carry around with me..that is crazy..if you get caught with a handgun here you are looking at time.

I have a few... Ruger Mag. 357 revolver, Rifle and Shotgun. I only use them for target shooting because I just happen to enjoy it. The Ruger is kepy locked up. The rifle and shotgun are in peices until I put them together to go shoot at pieces of paper.

I used to, but don't find myself in situations that are dangerous anymore...unless I am backpacking alone.. I think that is about the only place I will carry

Guns are just to ensure taht if people fuck with you to a certain degree, you can at least defend yourself. There was an EverQuest Friend that got killed at a bar while out with his friend because he was defending someone in the back alley that was getting his ass kicked for convo with their ladies... its sucks man.

Thats why you carry a gun. I dunno why that club didnt have a metal detector or why they let certain ppl carry guns or whatever, but I wouldn't have liked to see that happen :(
