You may have thought you looked cool, but instead you showed what shouldnt be done. Congrats. I've been around firearms all my life, I have seen safety devices fail and people get seriously hurt. Its not pretty, and neither are the legal complications that follow :2 cents: |

think about every country you've ever seen where people carry guns in the streets. think about every country you know of where people do not do that. generally speaking, which of those groups are safer places to live? :helpme If you really don't know the (obvious) answer, go to www.nationmaster.com I know you think YOU are responsible and YOU are not a criminal, but if you defend your 'right' to bring a gun to 7-11 then you are also defending every white trash tweeker and wannabe gangsters 'right'. I don't care if you want to keep a gun beside the bed if it makes you sleep better, but it's just stupid (and should be illegal) to take it with you drinking at the club. |

i have to say - leaving your gun in the car is a BAD move. Bad enough when it's parked in your driveway (assuming it isn't parked in a locked garage) - But made even worse - if you only take it with you - at certain destinations but not at others. Just seems like you're opening up possibilities for somebody to break into your car - and get ahold of your pistol. ~Brett |

Nobody robs the airport cinnabon stand. Same concept. We would have less people carrying guns around ready for an arguement (as someone in this thread said, almost hoping someone gives you a reason to use it) if it was more likely that the next time you got pulled over you could face a heavy sentance for posession of a concealed weapon. IMO it should be treated like drunk driving. Even going so far as to set up occasional roadblocks to search for weapons. This would get guns out of the hands of gangs and criminals, while leaving your right to defend your home unaffected. There's no reason our muder rate couldn't be similar to other civilized nations. |

But, have you ever seen a cop around when you need one? They cant be everywhere at once. |
Quote:
They don't need to be everywhere. They just need to check the streets often enough to discourage people from carrying weapons to public places. To prevent gangsters rolling with their crew from packing. Over time, a lot of criminals guns would be confiscated. People who keep their guns at home are still protected. I would exempt hunting rifles from this prohibition because there is a reason you need to transport them, and they cannot be easily carried around without alerting the world to the fact that you have a gun. |

Fact: owning a gun doesn't make you a tough guy. |
I don't really like guns....

if you do carry make sure you practice and know how to operate it real well or that barrel will end up in your ass.

Lets take Nevada for instance... http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/nevada 1. Any person may apply to the sheriff of the county in which he resides for a permit on a form prescribed by regulation of the department. Application forms for permits must be furnished by the sheriff of each county upon request. 2. Except as otherwise provided in this section, the sheriff shall issue a permit for one or more specific firearms to any person who is qualified to possess a firearm under state and federal law, who submits an application in accordance with the provisions of this section and who: (a) Is a resident of this state; (b) Is 21 years of age or older; (c) Is not prohibited from possessing a firearm pursuant to NRS 202.360; and (d) Demonstrates competence with a firearm by presenting a certificate or other d0cumentation to the sheriff which shows that he: (1) Successfully completed a course in firearm safety approved by a sheriff in this state; or (2) Successfully completed a course in firearm safety offered by a federal, state or local law enforcement agency, community college, university or national organization that certifies instructors in firearm safety. Such a course must include instruction in the use of each firearm to which the application pertains and in the laws of this state relating to the proper use of a firearm. A sheriff may not approve a course in firearm safety pursuant to subparagraph (1) unless he determines that the course meets any standards that are established by the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association, or if the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association ceases to exist, its legal successor. Beginning 10/01/01 Non Residents Can apply for a Nevada Non resident permit. Non Residents must apply the same as Residents. They must appear in person at any Sheriffs Office. -=- There's a book written by John Lott called, More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun-Control Laws (Studies in Law and Economics) and to put it into 'Cliff Notes' form for you, and pardon the Amazon cut and paste job... Professor Lott gathered data on crime from all counties in the United States for over twenty years and compares the data with the passage of concealed weapons legislation. The results are astounding. Lott conclusively shows, by controlling for a wide range of other possible causes, that it is the ability of law abiding citizens to carry concealed guns that leads to dramatic drops in crime in states that enacted these laws. This occurence is perfectly logical. By increasing the probability that the potential criminal will face a negative result, (he will be shot with a gun) a risk averse potential criminal may well be deterred from engaging in criminal activity. To put it simpler; if 1 in 20 people decide to carry a concealed handgun on their person, the potential criminal faces a 5% chance that he will face a victim that will be able to defend himself quite adequately. The reduction in crime, as expected, increases as the number of citizens carrying concealed hanguns increases. Funny thing, I live within walking distance from the murder capital of the U.S., (Chicago had 599 murders in 2003, down from 648 a year earlier and the first time since 1967 that the total dipped below 600) yet the mayor and the governor don't belive law-abiding citizens should be able to carry concealed. Ask me if I feel safe and secure walking the streets at night unarmed, would you feel secure knowing those stats? |

I live on an Island state of Australia that suffered the biggest massacre by a lone gun man in the recorded history of the world a few years ago.
Needless to say we have really strict gun laws and as a result no one I know carries a gun. Which is very in keeping with this place because we have the cleanest air and water in the world and more protected wilderness than the whole of the U.S.. It is paradise and guns would just fuck it up. Here this works: "The most powerful weapon in the world is a focussed mind." - Bruce Lee |

I used to, but don't find myself in situations that are dangerous anymore...unless I am backpacking alone.. I think that is about the only place I will carry
