Check local laws. Some states require both parties to agree, some states don't.

depends on how you are doing it . . . if by telephone it will depend on the state.

if you are just carrying a tape recoder and doing it without their knowledge, I don't THINK it is illegal

probably also depends on what you are planning on doing with it

In the U.S., it is only legal in the state of Vermont.

In california, It is NOT illegal to record someones voice or video if it is in a public place.
It is illegal to record someones voice and then use it as evidence in a case, unless the person knows/and or agrees to a recording.

Certain cases involving federal crimes can be exempt.

The reason they use wires and taps is establish intent. Then they take the recordings to a judge who can issue a search warrent. Any evidence obtained in the search can be used as evidence.

They can also use their judgement to stop a crime in progress if a feed on a wire shows that it is active progress.
Then they use the recording to as evidence to show why they raided, But they still can't use it as evidence for prosecution of the perps.

I think you should always ask the person's permission. I think she has rights to it - she probably need to be paid a talent fee or something.

I think recording someone's voice or actions
is legal, if it has the permission of the particular
person being recorded.

yes it is legal, as long as you don't use it as a disadvantage for him. E.g. at court...
