Religion likes to make you humble. You arent worthy, someone suffered for you, you should spend your life trying to make up for that etc etc

It helps repress the whole "i'm just going to do what I want, when I want" impulse that would have destroyed early civilization, but is perfectly acceptable now.

Hence religion = irrelevant.

don't give me that shit. just as with other things, you know they are bad if you have a basis to compare them to. If I am always experiencing my nightmares and fears I will eventually become accustomed to that mindstate. Actually, most of the incidents of the word "hell" in the bible are actually mistranslations. The actual word used in the original hebrew is sheol. It means a pit in the ground. And the hades thing is quite confused by the references to gehenna. The research on it is quite interesting, but all those christians that fear eternal damnation should do some research on it.
