Hey, I need advice .....

I am not hotsted on a dedicated server, and I am complaining about the speed of the site.

The hosting company told me they will move me to another IP , so I will have much more speed there.

I never moved a server, and I don't really know what's the disadvantages in such act.

Is it going to harm my rank in Google?
Am I going to suffer from something ?

If your host know what he is doing the move to the new server won't effect you , only in a case of down time your Google rank and other se related benefits will be a lost.

You need to clarify with the host if they are moving you to another server or merely changing your IP on the same server? The latter will not improve your site's speed and the former may not either if they are moving you to another crowded or hardware challenged box. For a complete and/or accurate assessment of the problem we would need to more specifc information regarding the server you are on eg: port connection RAM, CPU, drive speed and/or IP and the server they intend to move you to. Additionally it would help to know what resources your site demands eg: scripting, php etc.??

Hello Cyberdudex,

The IP should not make any significant difference in the speed of your site as 100's of domains can operate on the same IP. The resource demands that you and the other clients load the server with, as well as the hardware specifications of the server, are going have a greater impact on what the server can handle.

In some instances it might not be the server! If everything has been working fine and all of a sudden you start receiving complaints you might inspect the trace routes that your customers can supply you, this can be an amazing source of information.

If your host does move you to a different server they should be able to make it seamless for you and invisible to your clients. If you would like some additional assistance hit me up on Monday when I get in to the office and I can get a System Administrator on the line to help with the technical side of the move.
