Yeah, the pay ones suck and usually value shit really high (many try to get an auction fee as well).
I found one free one online at: http://www.urlbuyers.com/valuation.cfm It just goes by length, rememberability, branding, etc. Even that one lists most of my domains at $500-1,000.
