In this field office in Washington, 32 prosecutors, investigators and a handful of FBI agents are spending millions of dollars to bring anti-obscenity cases to courthouses across the country for the first time in 10 years. Nothing is off limits, they warn, even soft-core cable programs such as HBO's long-running Real Sex or the adult movies widely offered in guestrooms of major hotel chains.
Quote:
Ashhahahahaha, a religious man who does not drink alcohol or caffeine, smoke, gamble or dance, and has fought unrelenting criticism that he has trod roughshod on civil liberties in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, is taking on the porn industry at a time when many experts say Americans are wary about government intrusion into their lives.
Quote:
The Justice Department recently hired Bruce Taylor, who was instrumental in a handful of convictions obtained over the past year and unsuccessfully represented the state in a 1981 case, Larry Flynt vs. Ohio.

"Just about everything on the Internet and almost everything in the video stores and everything in the adult bookstores is still prosecutable illegal obscenity," he said.

"Some of the cable versions of porno movies are prosecutable. Once it becomes obvious that this really is a federal felony instead of just a form of entertainment or investment, then legitimate companies, to stay legitimate, are going to have to distance themselves from it."

The Justice Department pursued obscenity cases vigorously in the 1970s and '80s, prosecuting not necessarily the worst offenders in terms of extreme material, but those it viewed as most responsible for pornography's proliferation.

Oosterbaan said the department is employing much the same strategy this time, targeting not only some of the most egregious hard-core porn but also more conventional material, in an effort "to be as effective as possible."
Quote:
Obscenity cases came to a standstill under Janet Reno, President Bill Clinton's attorney general, who focused on child pornography, which is considered child abuse and comes under different criminal statutes. The ensuing years saw an explosion of porn, so much so that critics say that Americans' tolerance for sexually explicit material rivals that of Europeans.

They don't easily give up, do they?
Why can't they admit that "they can't see us?"

It's a story like this that brightens my day. It's like clockwork. I laid this out years ago in posts.

Maybe the intention is good but the tactics are worse than the crime accused. Wait'll you see what happens in the long run. This is going to be a great anthropological and socialogical look at our cultures.

The statement in the story how we in the U.S. will have a tolerance to sex like Europeans is derogatory to Europe. I'll bet in Europe they don't have as many divorces and other sex crimes like we have here.

Anyhahahaha got the figures on sexcrimes prior to the web's expansion of adult material?

Hmmm, sounds like this Taylor guy read the book: Extortion, Jury Tampering and Using Duress for Dummies recently!

Yep! Saw that too?

Sex is a big political button cause Americans are so sex oriented in a mental way.

It's a diversion tactic and vindictive and the law enforcement in this country could use better support in everyday things like better weapons and armor and protection against stupid lawsuits than chasing people down for looking at snatch.

Sure there's a prob with porn but this ain't the way to go about it.

You right wing idiots who think there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans when it comes to porn prosecutions better read this article and learn the truth.

Vote Democrat and save yourself from prison.

Oh I'm not voting Democratic just because of this issue. To me it makes no difference as both parties screw up although at diffrent ends of the spectrum.

My beef is only on the way the problem is being handled. Porn has been around since the dawn of time. So has war, drugs, stupidity. Yet the proper way to handle it is through education not vindictive strategies. If the feds would educate people as to the hazards, if any, they would gain that foothold they're looking for.

Yet 'what' are they looking for?

Is it to protect people from 'evil porn peddlers' or is it to use that as a platform for deciding what the public can and can't say?

We've seen how far this has gone overboard on several historic occasions most recently the Janet Jackson debacle. Even now the same people who pushed for the fines are backing down as they know it was wrong and set far too many precedents on constitutional rights infringements.

What about adult material is offensive and dangerous? Does it depend on what disgusts someone or is it because if practiced it would lead to injuries?

They've got to draw a fine line here and just communicate with the adult industry and just up and say "Hey, we have a problem with this or that, can you guys try this or that etc. "

You'ld be suprised how far just sitting down and chatting will do.

On the other hand what about those people who got into the business as a last resort to pay catastrophic health bills or student loans and other suppressive financial burdens that are the result from negligence from our own government who let things get out of hand in the first place? I don't see a commission to put an end to stupidly high health care or ridiculous student loans or outrageous credit card and mortgage payments. Know why? Because it's another way of ripping off the public by major contributors to these politically motivated law enforcement programs. That's why.

There're far more dangerous things facing humanity than looking at pixelated pussy.

If the feds tried a blanket attack like the article suggests it would lead to counter lawsuits so enormous it would break the country. Too many nebulous areas and gray areas that would put far too much a liability on our judicial system.

The resolution is easy. Just sit down and talk it out. Team up to get rid of the spammers, identity theives, etc. That would streamline the industry so that we could put an end to this foolishness. That would send shockwaves to foreign elements outside of the jurisdiction of the U.S. who are doing the wrong thing. Work with ISPs etc. and get things done right.

I'm happy the controversy is in the news because I got into this business as a protest and what I predicted came to pass.

I've had to spend my entire adult life fighting crime. Too much. Yet when we would complain we were ignored and gangsters just flourished. Now the feds are pissed at porn? I wish they would cause I have a ton of hahahahahahahahas and cases I'ld sure like them to answer as to why they sat on their asses during 7 administrations and why porn is so important when these atrocities have occured and constantly avoided. Even today.

I agree with you, I think a big thing is the graphic spam has to stop, I get a ton of it and it comes from USA companies. They have to tighten up on this shit.

What atrocities? The worst atrocities I've seen is idiots on message boards posting disgusting pics without warning. Being able to order porn on PPV is an atrocity for you?

I think they should stick to fighting child porn instead of wasting time jailing innocent people.
