driver's licenses in Canada
does anyone know if it's possible to hold more than one (ie: have one from one province, and one from another)?
i'd like to hold both a B.C. and Alberta driver's license (for a variety of reasons) if it's possible... cheers to anyone who knows ![]()

One is enough for me , but tell them you are moving there, but they will more than likely require an address

When I moved from Quebec to Ontario they took my quebec one and actually forced me to do the same for my health insurance. Voided my medicare in 2 weeks making me have to go get my ontario health card within 2 weeks. I suppose you could lie and say you lost your old one and apply for a new one but it seems they're very picky about multiple licenses like this.

the only reason is a possible residency requirement issue that may come up in the future, for owning property in B.C.
legal only (duh).

I don't think you can have two legally, but it wouldn't hurt to call and ask. I live in MB but I get my license in Ontario, instead of $1400/year I pay $40.
BTW I have a cottage in ON so it's not illegal. |

sorry, I don't think that's possible. You can have one for all countries in US for a while and it's international, but it's valis just for few month, that's it. Otherviw you should have just one.

I have had both BC and Alberta at the same time... Go to DMV and get a new DL cause you "lost yours" When you get the one from the other prov, turn in your old one... easy.... I lived in Vancouver but worked in Alberta....... used to fly to Calgary to work... the job required an Alberta DL so.... |

As far as I know, it is not legal to have liceses in more than one province. They ask you at the DMV if you hold liceses in another province and if you do, you must turn it in. To get insurance also, I believe you must hold the license from that province, as that should be your primary residence. Why not try phoning the DMV and asking, it couldn't hurt.

There are insurance issues to worry about too. If you carry an Alta licence and move to BC but don't change your licence to your new primary address and you're in an accident, you may not be covered by insurance. They're a little sticky about these things.

obviously this is a stream of conciousness for me, and i haven't really looked into it - but what exactly is involved with getting a license in a new province? do i have to take a new test, or can i just trade in the old one from Alta, for a new one in B.C.? thanks...
