driver's licenses in Canada

does anyone know if it's possible to hold more than one (ie: have one from one province, and one from another)?

i'd like to hold both a B.C. and Alberta driver's license (for a variety of reasons) if it's possible...

cheers to anyone who knows :glugglug

You are not suppose to legally. It is possible however, illegal.

sweet7 04-07-2004 02:38 PM

Is it too personal to ask why?

JFK 04-07-2004 02:39 PM

One is enough for me , but tell them you are moving there, but they will more than likely require an address :2 cents:

TweetyBird 04-07-2004 02:40 PM

indeed

WiredGuy 04-07-2004 02:42 PM

When I moved from Quebec to Ontario they took my quebec one and actually forced me to do the same for my health insurance. Voided my medicare in 2 weeks making me have to go get my ontario health card within 2 weeks. I suppose you could lie and say you lost your old one and apply for a new one but it seems they're very picky about multiple licenses like this.

No. Unless you actually have 2 primary residences in 2 different provinces, your main residence will be used for only one driver's license.

Can you imagine the "database" mess this would cause if they actually permitted that?

quiet 04-07-2004 02:42 PM

the only reason is a possible residency requirement issue that may come up in the future, for owning property in B.C.

legal only (duh).

i'm in a odd position at the moment. i operate my company out of Alberta, but want to make my primary residence out of B.C. to avoid capital gains tax on that property (the one most likely to acrue the most in value, hence the reason i want it to be deemed primary).

Fabien 04-07-2004 02:48 PM

You can't
Unless you do some dirty tricks:2 cents:

Couldn't a BC resident own and operate an Alberta company?

I don't think you can have two legally, but it wouldn't hurt to call and ask. I live in MB but I get my license in Ontario, instead of $1400/year I pay $40. :winkwink:

BTW I have a cottage in ON so it's not illegal.

yes. though it might mean getting rid of my alberta drivers license, and i believe my alberta insurance... would rather not do that unless i'm forced to (which it looks like i might be).

Rich 04-07-2004 02:52 PM

What can I say I'm a cheap fuck.

Lucy 04-07-2004 02:55 PM

sorry, I don't think that's possible. You can have one for all countries in US for a while and it's international, but it's valis just for few month, that's it. Otherviw you should have just one.:winkwink:

So I'm guessing we're talking property tax on the BC place versus auto insurance on the Alberta area? If you're looking for a way to optimize the two rates in your favour, I doubt you'll be able to get two licenses. Unless you have a relative you wouldn't mind signing one of the two over too, but I wouldn't even trust my parents with titleship to property :)

C-Bass 04-07-2004 02:59 PM

You can hold them both, just dont tell anyone :winkwink:

not very legal

yes Quiet it can be done....

I have had both BC and Alberta at the same time...

Go to DMV and get a new DL cause you "lost yours"

When you get the one from the other prov, turn in your old one...

easy....

I lived in Vancouver but worked in Alberta.......
used to fly to Calgary to work... the job required an Alberta DL so....

quiet 04-07-2004 03:07 PM

hmm. and as far as holding a B.C. license + insurance from Alberta - is that possible? or must you have insurance from the same province you hold a license?

Shortbread 04-07-2004 03:19 PM

As far as I know, it is not legal to have liceses in more than one province. They ask you at the DMV if you hold liceses in another province and if you do, you must turn it in. To get insurance also, I believe you must hold the license from that province, as that should be your primary residence. Why not try phoning the DMV and asking, it couldn't hurt.

doober 04-07-2004 03:22 PM

i tried the legal way it cant be done, i could think of a few other ways but those arent exactly legal

Kassidy 04-07-2004 03:39 PM

There are insurance issues to worry about too. If you carry an Alta licence and move to BC but don't change your licence to your new primary address and you're in an accident, you may not be covered by insurance. They're a little sticky about these things.

:2 cents:

its is possible, but it isn't LEGAL!

quiet 04-07-2004 04:31 PM

obviously this is a stream of conciousness for me, and i haven't really looked into it - but what exactly is involved with getting a license in a new province? do i have to take a new test, or can i just trade in the old one from Alta, for a new one in B.C.? thanks...
