i found out in phoenix i'm the Largest traffic sender to the ASACP and I got the wind of the C P stuff from them too. I don't understand why adult material means psooblble CP? that's the same logic as anyone carrying tobacco also having weed or anyone with asprin having acid. I have to have a laptop with me when I travel, but from now on I'll be formating it before I come back to canada whipping everything clean. this is insane - the agent told me they would call by 9 or 10 am - it's now almost 2pm. they're obviously going though EVERY file. |

:( That totally sucks! Honestly I love Canada but sometimes you really have to wonder.......Canadian Customs seem to give Canadians such a hard time when returning from ANYWHERE, it toatally blows:mad: |

This is very upsetting for any of us crossing the border. My story is somewhat "unique" in that, I'm a transman, with "F" on my canadian passport. Queer people, let alone gender-ambiguous people are almost always stopped at the border. Certainly, that's been the case with me. I've been flying around the states a few times since my 2 month visit here in California. The odd thing is, going through security in airports is a *fucking* breeze for me. But the minute I'm speaking to a customs agent, I'm looked at a bit strangely, get asked a lot of questions... ie: "what do you do for a living", "how much money do you have while travelling", "Do you own your own home" etc etc. that's GOING to the US. (they assume if I go there for an extended period of time, I aim to stay there. Thank god I own my own house so they feel like I have a reason to come back!) Coming back, I don't typically have a problem, but I'm now seriously thinking of amending what I say I do for a living. If they ask, I'll say self-employed. If they ask for more info, I'm going to say "technical consultant"... If I'm not carrying a laptop or carrying anything potentially incriminating, I'm going to ask for a lawyer. It's one thing to be stopped at the border going into another country. I've been sent back before. But coming *in*, as a Canadian citizen? pppffft... I am going to assume I have some rights here. No more electronics for me. My friends here in Cali have highspeed. All material will be kept on servers. Has anyone tried creating "cover" sites... like mainstream websites to point to, when being interrogated? I'm pissed off and scared. I come home in a few weeks, and Toronto is where I'm landing before flying to Halifax. Tip for anyone on the east coast: AVOID TORONTO. My girlfriend says Halifax customs agents are the most laidback in the country. Good luck Sleazy. This really really bites. |

fucking insanity, Sleazy... please keep us posted on what comes of all this, you've got me more than a little concerned about my upcoming trip to Tokyo next month, i travel a lot and have *never* had a customs official *anywhere* want to search my laptop for actual content, this is just ridiculous.. http://twash.com/iku/moe.gif http://twash.com/iku/curly.gif http://twash.com/iku/angrysuit.gif btw, what kind of laptop are we talking about here... model, value..? |
|
Sleazy That's horrible. Any news yet? Hey Quiet your story isn't any better. You guys actually have me a little scared traveling home especially since they have a reason to go after me. That's nuts. |

One plus for being black at Canadian Border crossings...If they don't think you're shipping drugs, they don't think you're good for anything else and let you slide on through... Flying in from Mexico City to Toronto alone as a black man and receiving nothing but a stern look and ONE question and then stamping my passport is somewhat of a Miracle. Same thing with driving into Windsor from Detroit...I get a stern look, ONE question, I tell them that I have liquor in the trunk, they DON'T bother searching the trunk to see if i'm telling the truth, and then wave me through. |

sleazy dont worry about the spam everyone with an email acct gets spam the custom guys to and they know exactly what they are looking for everything will be just fine. when i was 20 i borrowed my mothers car and drove down to hamburg with some friends young and stupid we parked the car the whole weekend at the porno and drug district when we came home the customs ripped out all seats and went trough EVERY fucking door they had got tips from german police of course of course we didnt have anything but when they started to go trough the car i suddenly got to thinking what if someone planted drugs and is driving behind us and would have picked it of the car when we came home.. |
|
That's bad, Sleazy. Maybe you should start cleaning up your home computers right now in case they raid your house next? Remember what the U.S. government did to Randy Weaver! |
|
A couple things...Don't be calling your MP or raising a stink about this. If it comes to it back down and go buy another laptop. I have to say to some extent it's your own fault for having adult files on your machine. They will absolutely look at everything to classify it. I actually keep a virgin machine for travel, and I carry the purchase receipt with me. The downside to this is that if you think you were redflagged before, just wait you ain't seen nothin. I wouldn't cross the border in my own car if I were you. And if anyone thinks that passwords or encrypted disk volumes will help forget it. They can get anything open. |

Not true, the Canadian Fishery Officers are the most powerful law enforcement branch when it comes to search and seizure. Strange, but true. Some info about them, if you are interested. http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/media/backg...ac29-191_e.htm |
|
What about traveling with a virgin machine and a cd with all the info. You can easily have the cd in a cd player or even with the person you are traveling with. |
|
Does this make any sense? Is this not... ehm. Where warrant not necessary (3) Notwithstanding subsection (1), a fishery officer may exercise the power of search referred to in that subsection without a warrant issued under subsection (2) if the conditions for obtaining the warrant exist but by reason of exigent circumstances it would not be practical to obtain the warrant. |

WTF? How can they just do that??? millions of people carry laptops everyday on flights! why would they pic you out??? |

Unbelievably Fucked up. I can only imagine how pissed I would be. If they don't find anything, why do they keep you red flagged ? |

Most folks don't realize that customs of most countries, including the U.S., can and does on occasion search/confiscate people's belongings for pictures and other materials that are potentially obscene. With that said, one should only keep the minimal amount of data and passwords (don't save usernames/passwords on the laptop - enter them manually every time.), etc needed to conduct business. Keep the rest stored remote and be prepared to lose the laptop and related gear - shit happens! One should have extra funds readily available (and/or know how to find an internet cafe - caution: many are very unsecure!) for obtaining a new laptop fast and have a procedure for getting back up and running - pretty easy actually if one keeps their critical stuff stored remotely. I know there was talk of you using OSX at one point. If you were I am curious to know if you had File Vault turned on. And if you did if it was protecting your whole hard drive or just your porn. |
