I have a hard time seeing them open your future parcels and packages...It just doesnt seem right? Unless the content was illegal..which you stated it wasnt.

ps..hope i didnt sound like i was shit talkin .. i wasnt

Well my stuff was intercepted via mail from US and I don't believe customs get involved with searching residences etc and it's not like I was trying to get CP or some shit sent in.

I guess your name and adddress goes onto some list and future parcels are checked for the same type of materials. Not involved in that niche any longer so no big deal really.

Do some shit talkin if you want :)

goBigtime 04-05-2004 01:12 AM

I typed all this...

Wtf... can they even do that?

Doesn't that cost your business money?

I wonder what the legalities would be if you had some hardcore encryption on there.

Would they force you to unlock they drive for them?

What would they do if you told them you forgot the password and have it written down at home somewhere.

I thought Canada was supposed to be a good country?

But then I just decided to \/\/rite this instead...

Wtf Canada??

Canada Customs doesn't like pornography period.

WHo ever suggested just take it back and demand they get a court order .. That's nonsense and good luck with that. You have very few rights once you try to cross that border. You can't decide what they're going to keep for further inspections.

Buddy of mine came back from living in Costa Rica with a hard drive. Customs seized his harddrive in the same fashion they did your notebook. Later they sent him a letter saying they had confiscated it for Illegal Import and they were keeping it. No charges filed.

Just buy a new notebook and count your lucky stars that they didn't decide to strip search you too.

That's a good question.

You have very few rights once you try to cross that border...

And here and I thought Canada was something of a free country. Maybe you need to clean her majesties name off of everything up there and try to get down to your individual rights. Your customs is a law enforcement arm and has to follow the law just like the RCMP does the last I heard.

You couldn't 'take it back' but you could demand to stay in its presence while you insisted on a legally signed seizure order by a high level judge.

Now if you were supposed to have some sort of form like the one guy said, oh well, SOMEone messed up then. But still it should take a judge to even enforce that. Dubya hasn't gotten around to deleting that area of our rights yet. lol Thats on the 2005 calender if he gets back in.

Validus 04-05-2004 01:30 AM

No, I can most certainly say, once they confiscated your computer, passwords are totally irrelevant. The thing is though, they need people who know what they are doing in order to get based the password protection. Those are not in surplus in Canada.

Do you encrypt certain files?

I promise you they don't need a judge to sign anything.

Canada Customs, can tear your car apart too ... No they don't need a judge to sign.

You don't have to cross the border if you don't like it, but that's the way it is.

m00d 04-05-2004 01:40 AM

atleast it was canadian officials and not US customs

most likely your name was red flagged when they scanned your passport for whatever reason. you are probably under investigation by someone.

i was interrogated crossing the border from WA, to BC not too long ago because they asked me what i did, i said "web development" and they asked me directly if i owned any adult sites and i said yes.

they asked me to pull over and go talk to the Customs guys where they were asking enough questions that it was beyond routine. it made me uncomfortable enough that i did not plan on going back soon. i would certainly never cross the border with a notebook after that.

I agree, you have to be crazy to carry any adult files on a laptop when traveling between countries. Just asking for problems.

SleazyDream 04-05-2004 02:00 AM

Hope you dont have tub girl on there...

i fly a lot and travel all over the world. i back up everything to one of my servers and then download anything i need, if i need it once i get where i am going.

SleazyDream 04-05-2004 02:08 AM

all my invoices were on that computer. (ok, i have backups) but i'm thinking now...

come tax time next year I techicnally can say that canada customs and revenue - which is the same company - has all my records and wrtie off 10X as much faking a bunch of stuff. I wonder if that's possible....

RP Fade 04-05-2004 02:11 AM

pornstar2pac 04-05-2004 03:03 AM

Don't worry about it that much. Jails in Canada are heated during winter time:)

Ash@phpFX 04-05-2004 03:05 AM

that really sucks sleazy, what was the reason they took it?
if i was carying a laptop like that i would make sure i have backups of everything, so you can continue business in a situation like this (which im sure you've done) and ill probably also encrypt the hard drive to stop fuckers looking at my shit.

hopefully you get it back soon.

oh, and i got your tatoos today, thanks! :thumbsup

Roger 04-05-2004 03:08 AM

I've never had such problems but I guess the world is starting to go to shit because they're dead scared of terrorists. If you're not the normal/conventional kinda guy they're gonna be suspicious.

That's why I don't travel anymore, I really don't react very well in those type of situations. I would've lost my mind.

Jdoughs 04-05-2004 03:15 AM

Sleazy you may also wanna change your passes on sponsors if you logged on from that laptop.

One thing thats true in US or CAN

The Gov isnt the one to trust with your shit.

once again GL.

hmmm my Dad is a customs broker in winepeg...not an officer but a broker..wonder if he gets any porn through his shit

fris 04-05-2004 03:19 AM

Sounds like a man with a plan. This story scared the shit out of me cause I never even thought about this. I happily travel the world with my laptop being open about evrything. I bet that if the checked my laptop they could even find some cp hahahahahahas (redirections from reviewing sites) and I would be really fucked.
I need to clean my laptop thoroughly before traveling borders. Thanks for the warning...

I'm beyound shit scarded, not cause of any my content - no worries there - but because of spam. I hadn't emptied my email trash folder in a whille and I have no idea what's in there or if I'm liable for any of it - as customs people can be idiots when it comes to this kind of thing. Probally 10K plus spams in there.

Call your MP and complain.

Call the newspapers and complain.

How clueless can they be? True story:
About 5 years ago I was flying from Canada to the states, returning home from Christmas. In my carry-on bag, I had a toaster oven someone gave to me. We're talking about a 9"x12"x14" toaster oven, not some mini-toaster thing... a full-sized toaster oven. A lady working for U.S. customs looked in my bag, shuffled a few things around, and then as she closed my bag she said "Don't worry, you don't have to turn on your computer." I had no computer; she was referring to the toaster oven!

So hopefully the Canadian customs agents won't try to jam a slice of bread into your laptop before they turn it on :1orglaugh

:1orglaugh Great story! Like they say "You don't have to be smart to work Customs, just suspicious."
