north becomes south (PIC)

The earths magnetic field is decreasing in strength, and some scientists believe that it is in the midst of a reversal. This is not a new occurrence as it happens about every quarter of a million years, though the last one occured about 750 million years ago. The earths magnetic field protects us from solar radiation by concentrating it towards the largely uninhabited poles.

As you can see, this will not be the case when our field is in the midst of the reversal. What do you think will happen? I predict high incidences of cancer for sure. Also, it seems to me that marine mammals that use the field to navigate will beach themselves left and right. Any thoughts?

if the last one happened 750 million years ago, that pretty much blows a hole in the "it happens every 1/4 million years" theory doesn't it?

We are overdue for a reversal. Many scientists belive that it is occurring right now, and it is well documented that our field is about 1/2 as strong as it was during roman times.

yep we are overdue for it. it'll be super when it does happen, and it's happened a bunch of times in the past.

Cancer? that's whack, tho. Since when did turning from north south to south north give YOU cancer ;)

Yes, cancer. Since the solar particles wont be directed towards the largely uninhabited poles during the reversal, cancer rates will likely increase.

In other news, Mars athmosphere went bye bye when its magnetic field died.

I guarantee you that it will not happen. I am a scientist and I have done countless hours of studys on this. It is impossible. I am a PhD in the geomagnetic spacial scientific sciences. Seriously. Don't worry.

Higher cases of cancer, that's for sure. But we'll also see more aurora in unusual places.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/magnetic/

"It's impossible to know for sure, but the best guess is that every year a hundred thousand people would die from the increased levels of space radiation. But of course this would still represent only a relatively small increase in the overall incidence of cancer.

GARY GLATZMAIER: So it's not going to be catastrophic. It'll be something to be concerned about, but it won't be a catastrophic event. And certainly by the time it happens, civilization will have figured out how to deal with it.

MARIO ACUNA: The field will come back. In the case of Mars we know that the field will not come back, and it has been gone for billions of years, so the effect has been very, very serious on the Mars atmosphere. But on the Earth's atmosphere just a few thousand years of no magnetic field are not expected to result in a very large stripping of the atmosphere.

The great thing is that it would be possible to see the aurora just about every night all over the Earth. So London, behind me, for example, we might be able to see great aurora just about every night of the year, shimmering and moving in the sky as the solar wind hits the atmosphere directly, and it glows like a neon light."

own off? hardly, since the theory you mentioned isn't even remotely accurate, nor is your 1/2 witted response. Who gives a shit about roman times, that was barely 2000 years ago, let alone 250,000

are you kidding me?

Its because it jackass scientist bullshit. They have no fucking clue, only speculation. SO, when one of these scientist mention it to someone in the press, or someone who mentions it to the press, they publish it and scare the fuck out of everyeone, even tho its only a theory.

what part of that did you not read/understand?

has nothing to do with conversion ratios from day to day, and i'm sorry a 500 MILLION year swing is quite a fucking leap no matter how you look at it, far too much of a swing to be considered a "close enough" or "just a little off"

That'd be like oracle saying he makes sales daily when in fact it's once every quarter of a million years.

500 million years slight miscalculation eh?

science is a little more accurate then that though, 500 million years isn't like a week, or a month.... thats far too huge a HUGE swing to even be considered a shitty hypothesis

Lets say we live to be 100 years, or rather that we live 100 more years.

100/250,000 years = .0004

That is the span for which you will be around, now if the field is already 50% off, and this is since a couple of thousand years ago, its not like its going to drop from 50% to 10% in the next 2 years, and we've been living just fine with this decreased field for the last few centuries, so maybe it is happening, maybe it will happen, but the chances that you will experience it in your lifetime are quite slim.

From that PBS site:

"Judging from history, we know that a reversal is long overdue. But there's no need to throw away your old compasses. A reversal usually takes hundreds or thousands of years to complete."

Well, I guess it would be a wast of time to discuss with you about the nature of statistics.

For the others:
Anyway, the magnetic field has changed often in the past and it will continue to change it's polarisation, these changes happen on average every 250 million years and it takes a loooong time compared to human lifespan to complete such a change, so chances are good that your compass shows you the right direction tomorrow too.

BTW: The magnetic pole is about 2000km away from the geographic pole and keeps drifting away a few kilometers each year.
