north becomes south (PIC)
The earths magnetic field is decreasing in strength, and some scientists believe that it is in the midst of a reversal. This is not a new occurrence as it happens about every quarter of a million years, though the last one occured about 750 million years ago. The earths magnetic field protects us from solar radiation by concentrating it towards the largely uninhabited poles.
http://www.ex-angel.com/images/chaos.gif As you can see, this will not be the case when our field is in the midst of the reversal. What do you think will happen? I predict high incidences of cancer for sure. Also, it seems to me that marine mammals that use the field to navigate will beach themselves left and right. Any thoughts? |
quickly everybody move to another planet

I'll be long gone before any shit happens so..........

yep we are overdue for it. it'll be super when it does happen, and it's happened a bunch of times in the past.
Cancer? that's whack, tho. Since when did turning from north south to south north give YOU cancer ;) |
i can't take that information to the bank.
|
GODDAMNIT!!! i just bought one of those cool watch/compass thingies

Yes, cancer:(. Since the solar particles wont be directed towards the largely uninhabited poles during the reversal, cancer rates will likely increase. In other news, Mars athmosphere went bye bye when its magnetic field died. |
That sounds like some crazy shit.

wow thats weird, i didnt know that happened.
this is surely going to fuck up my compass :( |

Ok hun, lets see that research:). Seriously, I do like to see both sides of the story. |

Higher cases of cancer, that's for sure. But we'll also see more aurora in unusual places.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/magnetic/ "It's impossible to know for sure, but the best guess is that every year a hundred thousand people would die from the increased levels of space radiation. But of course this would still represent only a relatively small increase in the overall incidence of cancer. GARY GLATZMAIER: So it's not going to be catastrophic. It'll be something to be concerned about, but it won't be a catastrophic event. And certainly by the time it happens, civilization will have figured out how to deal with it. MARIO ACUNA: The field will come back. In the case of Mars we know that the field will not come back, and it has been gone for billions of years, so the effect has been very, very serious on the Mars atmosphere. But on the Earth's atmosphere just a few thousand years of no magnetic field are not expected to result in a very large stripping of the atmosphere. The great thing is that it would be possible to see the aurora just about every night all over the Earth. So London, behind me, for example, we might be able to see great aurora just about every night of the year, shimmering and moving in the sky as the solar wind hits the atmosphere directly, and it glows like a neon light." |
maybe the same happened on Mars loooooooooooong time ago?

are you kidding me? OWN BACK ON |

Yep we have seen the Aura lights overe here a bit!!!
Didn't scientists also say that because Mar's Magnetic Filed Collapse that's a reason why it lies in ruins and is red!! I'll try and find the article and post it!!! |

what part of that did you not read/understand? has nothing to do with conversion ratios from day to day, and i'm sorry a 500 MILLION year swing is quite a fucking leap no matter how you look at it, far too much of a swing to be considered a "close enough" or "just a little off" That'd be like oracle saying he makes sales daily when in fact it's once every quarter of a million years. 500 million years :1orglaugh slight miscalculation eh? |

Lets say we live to be 100 years, or rather that we live 100 more years.
100/250,000 years = .0004 That is the span for which you will be around, now if the field is already 50% off, and this is since a couple of thousand years ago, its not like its going to drop from 50% to 10% in the next 2 years, and we've been living just fine with this decreased field for the last few centuries, so maybe it is happening, maybe it will happen, but the chances that you will experience it in your lifetime are quite slim. |
wow, fascinating!
|
Woot cosmic rays!!! were all gona get super powers like in dem movies!! Yeeehaaw!:glugglug
|
I was on Stewart Island at xmas a few years ago and saw the Aurora
Totaly mind blowing! |
Too weird for my brain :D
|
From that PBS site:
"Judging from history, we know that a reversal is long overdue. But there's no need to throw away your old compasses. A reversal usually takes hundreds or thousands of years to complete." :Graucho :thumbsup |
we should just move to uranus
|
I believe that's the premis of that new movie "The Day After Tomorrow" coming out soon. Basically, mass chaos and destruction will occur...

For the others: Anyway, the magnetic field has changed often in the past and it will continue to change it's polarisation, these changes happen on average every 250 million years and it takes a loooong time compared to human lifespan to complete such a change, so chances are good that your compass shows you the right direction tomorrow too. :) BTW: The magnetic pole is about 2000km away from the geographic pole and keeps drifting away a few kilometers each year. |
i say we go to the pluto
|
Is this still an adult webmaster board?
|
i would not live that long and see this happen... i bet no one cares.. everyone is already dead by then

It's the end of the world as we know it.
