Lure of big bucks turns amateurs on

Who wants to be a porn star? An Edmonton-based adult film company, specializing in amateur pornography, is looking for a few daring Winnipeggers to take it all off and get busy -- no experience required.

"Our First Time series is exactly that, first time," said Jason Danilak, the owner of Real Productions. "There is really a backlash against the glossy adult video. Really the market is for amateur right now. It's the No. 1 seller."

The company is in search of first timers, especially women, interested in fulfilling a secret desire, the 35-year-old former adult performer said.

Advertising locally for two years -- including in The Winnipeg Sun -- Real Productions gets an average of three inquiries from local women each month. The company gets tons of calls from men, he said.

"For a guy, it's kind of a macho he-man thing to do and for a girl, it's kind of frowned upon," he said. "It surprises me about how indiscreet men are. They literally use this as a pickup line at the bar."

$15,000 FOR WOMEN

Women make a minimum of $15,000 -- that's an estimate of 40% of gross sales of First Time videos. Men make between $100 and $500, Danilak said.

"We make our money because of the girl. We wouldn't make a nickel if we marketed them around the guy."

The three-year-old company has produced two videos with Winnipeg actors. Three more locals are being interviewed for upcoming projects.

Twelve additional people -- including couples -- are awaiting call-backs from Real Productions, he said.

Danilak said he hired a Winnipeg-based producer three months ago. The company plans to film a lot more movies here, he said.

Ray Jones, not his real name, got the job after applying as an actor.

Jones, a Catholic, said he thought hard before accepting Real Productions' offer.

"If my mom or dad knew about this I'd be a dead man," he said. "I don't think nothing about it no more. It's my job. No one else is going to sign me a cheque."

He interviews the actors and does a screen test, said the 38-year-old former construction worker.

There are perks to being a porn producer, Jones said.

"I always meet new girls and I really have fun. Some of these girls are really shy and I basically help them take their clothes off," he said.

The work isn't all naked women and fun, Jones said.

"There's no room for bulls---. You tell her what she's getting into. You tell her what's going to happen ... she is human and has feeling like anyone else."

Real Productions has a very strict screening process, Danilak said. All applicants must pass an interview, including explaining why they want to be in an adult film. No drugs or alcohol allowed on set, he said.

Looks are also a consideration, Danilak said. Actresses must be attractive.

"That's what sells," he said.

But that policy is not as rigid for men -- also paid significantly less, he said.

"It's kind of the reason why (U.S. porn star) Ron Jeremy has become so popular. Men think 'If she'll sleep with him maybe I'll have a shot.'"

The average women signed up at Real Productions is 18-35 years old, Danilak said.

"Men go up quite a bit older. One guy was about 58," he said.

The company spends up to four days shooting on a budget of about $3,000, Danilak said.

He has produced 60 films since Real Production's opening. The company shoots in locations such as hotels, businesses, bars and homes.

The company, with 14 staff, also has an office in Las Vegas.

Danilak said Canada is far more liberal than its southern neighbour.

"When it comes to production, there are a lot of places it's against the law to shoot an adult video."

Danilak has started work on a reality series profiling some of the amateur actors in his First Time videos. Producers from The Oprah Winfrey Show have been in contact with Real Productions, interested in doing a segment on the new show, Danilak said. The reality series hasn't featured any Winnipeggers yet, but might in upcoming episodes, he said.
