Turned into a political website, www.HowardStern.com, has been shut down by many ISPs. He put anti Bush, pro Kerry links on the site and many will not link it. Freedom of speech is GONE.

While I don't think the government has done anything to censor it, as the site becomes more political, it will be subject to regulation by the federal election commission. You can't just put up web sites and state your political view in the US, unless it costs you under a couple hundred bucks or something. You need to file paperwork with the federal election commission. It's the same reason you can't take out an ad in the paper or run a TV commercial espousing your political viewpoint.

We have freedom of speech, as in we can walk down the street and say "hey, I don't like Bush," or write non-obscene political statements on a piece of sign and carry it in certain government-approved areas, but when it costs money to broadcast our opinions to several people at once, that freedom has been elminated through "campaign finance reform." As a webmaster, be advised that you can get in deep shit if you promote any political causes on your sites and fail to file the proper paperwork. Ironically, last election Bush was railing against an anti-Bush web site, which until then had been within the allowable spending limits, but once he talked about it in the media, it got bombarded with traffic, and drove up the bandwidth costs, which caused it to be in violation of FEC spending limits. I think they initiated an investigation, but the PR backlash caused the complaint to be withdrawn.

Is howardstern.com expressly advocating the defeat of George W. Bush? It's debatable, and I'm sure Stern's attorneys are carefully tiptoeing around the issue. Look on the site and there's a section of "Friggin Bush" links, all critical of Bush, and Stern says "Vote out every Republican you can find," but that assiduously avoids advocating the defeat of a "clearly identified candidate." I don't listen to his show, so I don't know, but has he explicitly advocated Bush's defeat? Or is he just criticizing him and his positions?

He can say whatever he wants, as long as it's not paid-for commercial speech - talk shows like that are presumably profitable, or try to be profitable, so they're not spending money to espouse their political views. The web is uncharted territory. what the fuck? that site isn't a commercial site. Can't Howard Stern have a personal website where he can say whatever he wants like every other citizen of the United States? Because he also has a radio show he can't have an anti-Bush bumper sticker on his car?

i'm not really up on the election laws so maybe he doesn't have the right. can a private citizen buy ad space in a newspaper and write in support or against a candidate? if so then then Howard Stern.com is no different than that.

I thought if u weren't being paid by the parties that u could do whatever u wanted.

Stern can have a personal website, the same as anybody. Legally, however, individuals as well as companies and other groups fall under campaign finance laws. A private citizen can buy ad space if it's under $100, or for more if it doesn't advocate election or defeat of a particular candidate. It doesn't matter whether you're being paid by the parties or not. That's part of what the campaign finance reform debate has been about - a loophole existed such that you couldn't give much to a candidate, but you could spend billions of dollars running your own ads for a candidate, or against their component. Not much has changed, but new loopholes had to be found to achieve the same thing.

Totally agree....up until recently there has not really been an active stern website....which I always found ironic, but it is true....now it looks like it is just being used as forum for them to post links to his position on the FCC, CC, and Bush
