is your HD slower when FULL

I just benchmarked my harddrive and its almost twice as slow as when I benchmarked a harddrive thats only 5% full. So is my drive damaged or something or is it normal for full harddrives to be slow. BTW I use SiSoft Sandra 2004 for the benchmark test

Defragging and checking for dupe .dll's will sometimes do the trick.

Well technically it should be faster, as your data is now being written onto the outer edge of the drive itself. Since the whole disc is spinning at the same speed, the magnet will read way more data in the same amount of time on the outer edge

Of course this goes way beyond most people's disk-access problems, so yes, you're probably fragged to hell.

Exactly, and like he said, do a defrag, a full fragmented Hard Drive would be hell.

Try getting rid of stuff you don't need...use Norton or Windows Washer...

Or better yet get a newer/bigger/faster HD

spot on, definately try a defrag. if its running really slow make sure there arent other devices on the ide chain that are slowing it down, ive seen that happen before

It depends man.

if this is the same hard drive that you have your copy of windows running and and installed on then the more full it gets the less and less room it has for its swap file which really really slows the system down.

And yea, you need to defrag the mother, it is just like getting more and more junk in your room, the more shit you have the harder it is to find what you are looking for

Yeah, I wonder why windows doesn't have that feature in built, I use it all the time.

Wouldn't it be logical to write to the outer edge first and then move inwards? I don't see ANY advantage to writing to the inner (slow) edge first.

I think you see a decrease in perfomance because the data is written to the inner edge (slow) as opposed to the outer edge (fast) when you tested a while ago. (plus of course, fragmenation plays some role in this too) I could be wrong though... :-/
