is your HD slower when FULL

I just benchmarked my harddrive and its almost twice as slow as when I benchmarked a harddrive thats only 5% full. So is my drive damaged or something or is it normal for full harddrives to be slow. BTW I use SiSoft Sandra 2004 for the benchmark test

body 03-21-2004 01:20 PM

My is also slow, so I can just say there is no damage, but what do I know hheh:)

mike503 03-21-2004 01:21 PM

defragging should help some.

shermo 03-21-2004 01:23 PM

Defragging and checking for dupe .dll's will sometimes do the trick. :thumbsup

fuzebox 03-21-2004 01:55 PM

Well technically it should be faster, as your data is now being written onto the outer edge of the drive itself. Since the whole disc is spinning at the same speed, the magnet will read way more data in the same amount of time on the outer edge :)

Of course this goes way beyond most people's disk-access problems, so yes, you're probably fragged to hell.

Exactly, and like he said, do a defrag, a full fragmented Hard Drive would be hell.

Disk Defragmenter will help. :2 cents:

TweetyBird 03-21-2004 02:45 PM

yup !! always a good thing to run

arial 03-21-2004 02:47 PM

Try doing a weekly defrag, should help a lot.

WicKed NinJas 03-21-2004 02:48 PM

a defrag and scandisk a week keeps my PC running pretty good.

latinasojourn 03-21-2004 04:31 PM

defrag and remove nonessential programs that rob your RAM

msconfig

B40 03-21-2004 04:32 PM

Try getting rid of stuff you don't need...use Norton or Windows Washer...

Or better yet get a newer/bigger/faster HD :Graucho

:thumbsup spot on, definately try a defrag. if its running really slow make sure there arent other devices on the ide chain that are slowing it down, ive seen that happen before

Spunky 03-21-2004 09:14 PM

A hard smack on top of the box works well

unconnected 03-21-2004 09:17 PM

It depends man.

if this is the same hard drive that you have your copy of windows running and and installed on then the more full it gets the less and less room it has for its swap file which really really slows the system down.

And yea, you need to defrag the mother, it is just like getting more and more junk in your room, the more shit you have the harder it is to find what you are looking for

CS-Jay 03-21-2004 10:37 PM

hehe, for some reason I thought the thread was about Harley Davidson's gas tanks being full.

Yeah, I wonder why windows doesn't have that feature in built, I use it all the time. :)

Wouldn't it be logical to write to the outer edge first and then move inwards? I don't see ANY advantage to writing to the inner (slow) edge first.

I think you see a decrease in perfomance because the data is written to the inner edge (slow) as opposed to the outer edge (fast) when you tested a while ago. (plus of course, fragmenation plays some role in this too) I could be wrong though... :-/

Vitasoy 03-21-2004 11:59 PM

Like everyone said, do a defrag... If that dosn't help burn or del some stuff to clear up some space.

SoundMan 03-22-2004 12:20 AM

plug the PC into your dryer wall socket..

the fucker will be smoking fast...

sizzle wizzel.

Living For Today 03-22-2004 12:24 AM

of course it runs slower ;) i just recently did a degrag and it is going a bit faster now.

Maxxx 03-22-2004 12:27 AM

Na bro... check this program out

its called fdisk... run from a dos prompt.

just kidding man, yes defrag... but you could go by a7200 rpm drive... those are quick... ofcorse not like my 10000 rpm scsi's
