Help Me Pick Out a Red Wine that Impresses!
One of my clients is a huge redwine fan (preferably Cabernet) and I have to get her a bottle as a thank you gift. I'm not too big on wines so I'm clueless. If you could, please recommend a good wine that will impress the hell out of her. Price is not an issue.
I was looking at a 2000 Opus One. I really need something to blow her socks off.

It seems as if you sould go for the pricey stuff:
Harlan Estate Grace Family Araujo Estate If you can find it, maybe $500-600 a bottle. Personally, I 'd go for 2-3 cases of something without a "BIG" name and worth drinking like David Cofarro, Limerick Lane, Mauritson (probably one of the best Zins out there). IMHO PS I have some older Silver Oak I'd be happy to part with for the right $$$ |

Forget American wine, if she knows her stuff a bottle of Chateau Haut Batailley or a Chateau de Belcier will blow her socks off and at around $80- $120 a bottle its great value for an 80 or 83 vintage.
If you didnt want to spend that much a Mouton Cadet is excellent every day drinking wine red or white at about $10 at most Vons or Trader Joes. |

We did a blind tasting recently of great reds- Opus, Caymus, Beringer reserves etc and thru in a ringer - french bordeaux
2000 Chateau Margaux. It completely blew the other wines off the table. The tasting was completely blind - all the participants have been in the wine business for between 15 and 35 years. Everyone at the tasting picked it #1 by a mile and even the guys who were selling the Opus and Caymus admitted that their wines were completely blown away by the Margaux. It'll cost you about 350 wholesale, maybe around 500 retail- If its the richness and intensity she likes in California cabs, consider an Australian cab or a cab/shiraz blend - theyre even richer and more intense and a bit more reasonable than the French. Penfolds make some in the opus/caymus price range that are unbelievable- but stay away fom the Grange hermitage unless its at lest 20 years old. Had a ten year old one last year and it tasted like it had been botled for about a mounth |

Ditch the cult Cabs -- they're nothing more than trophies from the dot-com boom...
All depends on your price range. Lots of great suggestions here. A bit more reasonable than has been mentioned (at least I didn't see it) would be the BV Georges de Latour -- seem to remember that the '97 and the '00 were nice recently... ![]() <br> |
