Genetic Testing for Cancer Genes

Has anyone had this done, or know of anyone who has?

I have an aunt who is trying to get some of my family members to do this due to a family history of breast cancer.

http://cancer.duke.edu/hcc/procon.asp

I really have no clue what to expect, or if its even a good idea. I have yet to be tested but not sure if I want to be...

Yeah I have only been thinking about it recently, and I don't think I want to do it. But maybe I need to know.

I don't know anyone who has had this done though. Its pretty whacky.

cherrylula this is a serious matter.
They will look for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, related to familiar breast cancer. Think before to do it, it's a really difficult choice, if they discover one of them your life will change dramatically cos there is a probability over 90% you will have a breast cancer in your life. If you want to know more feel free to contact me

My g/f's mom is part of a team at a very big medical college that are leading the research in this field, trying to pin down which side of the family cancer will show up on, and how it is traced through lineage.

I *think* my g/f and all of her siblings had to do something along those lines, because her family is one of the test subjects.

If you'd like I can put you in contact with her, as she may have some better answers for you than my unhealthy ass.

I would like to hear from someone who has had it done already, if possible. oh well

cool thanks CT... maybe so as things develop with the testing.

I have one family member waiting on test results and the tissue of a deceased family member was just located in some hospital archives and they are testing that as well.

I have an aunt taking care of all the details, so will see what happens. Its pretty twisted but so is my family. Not sure if its a good idea but we will see I suppose.

OK, here're my thoughts about it and i think that ANYONE will agree.

You SHOULD do the tests, if it is possible that you can have some treatment in advance that will eliminate or highly reduce the risk of having that disease.

But you SHOULD NOT do the tests only to know what are your chances of having a particular disease in future.
Since it may happen that you get the results that there's only 1% of probablility that you will get an incurable disease....but you will actually get it.
Or according to the results, you will have 90% risk of that disese and that will change your whole life perspective and behavior....but you'll never get that disease
