It varies where you are from as to what goes in a ruben. Some places use ham, some use corned beef.

Either way, I don't eat meat.

Use corned beef! You can by it in brisket's and just cook it like roast beef. It's really good on rubens, or you can just eat it by it's self or you can even make corned beef hash for breakfast. It works out great!

I am Pennsylvania Dutch, there is kraut juice running through my veins.

corned beef is very easily had in the UK but I couldn't make a ruben from it. Though, in a pinch I have done a mock version with ham.

If anyone is from the Gainesville area, go get a Reuban from The Bakery Mill beside TJ Max just off Newberry and Tower.

AMAZING.

bread (most people go for rye but I don't like rye so just bread)
pastrami (though, if you read above there are variations)
swiss cheese
saurerkraut
thousand island dressing

combine all of that, stick on a grill (foreman grills work great) and serve hot and crispy.

Pickle on the side.

The only thing that would have made it better would have been a glass of birch beer. Can't get birch beer over here
