Server/Dns Techies HELP!

Can someone please explain this to me??

3 weeks or so ago I moved one of my sites to another hosting company. It took about 2 days for the DNS/Nameservers to fully settle. I waited about a week before submitting galleries just to make sure. I noticed a couple of TGP script were not accepting my galleries. A few days later a lose my 3 year partner account at Pichunter(got it back, explained my situation to Tom) for 404's...shocked!! Its turns out some people are still getting redirected to the files on the old server.

Today, 3-4 weeks later some people still get my old hosts IP when pinging the domain. WTF is going on??

I spoke to tech of the old host/server about a week ago, the guy said he would take care of..He didnt (or couldnt) do shit.

That shouldnt be happening at all, DNS cache times out usually quite quickly, certainly after 3-4 weeks. The only possibility that I can think of off of the top of my head is that your old host had an extremely large TTL value in your dns records which some nameservers are still respecting. You need to contact your hold host and find out what TTL value they were using, if its small, then you need to verify your DNS setup and make sure that no one is missing something.

Also when you are 404'ing are you sure that people are being sent to your old site that doesnt exist anymore, or it could it just be some misconfiguration problems with your new host?

My Old host: I contacted them, they said they knew what the problem is and they would fix it, that was a week ago

My DNS set up has been checked over and over, I even called DirectNic

My New host: Disected the problem and server and assured me that the server is setup correctly, besides I have 10 other domains on that server, they are all fine.

404ing, yes they get an old 404 page I had on the old server. I removed the htaccess from the new server.

Had the same problem happen to us. It took 2 months+ for a domain to be reached at the proper IP.
Found out that it was due to some shitty ISP not clearing or updating their cache often enough.

Correct me if im wrong. If the old server files get deleted the ISP will automaticaly look for an updated DNS, right?

If this is the case, I dont know WTF they are waiting for to delete my site. Damn!!!

I know they files are still on that server, there is one TGP script that said "gallery redirected to ...." a file that no longer exists on my new server.

BTW: The old host is NOT Oxeo. Oxeo is who I moved to..and Im VERY glad I did.

Unlike my "old" host, Oxeo's tech worked very closely with me on this.

why dont they take your domain right out of your old servers dns totally then it terminates all routes, thats what i do, if i move from my box to another, or someone on my box does.

Like I said, I contacted them last week to delete my domain from that old server..still waiting. Assuming that this is the problem.

We have seen this in past moves with people who have various types of accellerator programs. One of the "tricks" of these programs is to modify the host file and hard write the DNS to IP information to avoid having to look it up. If this is the issue you are looking at a case by case edit and the permanent loss of some people.

Finally got in touch with the "old" host. He just deleted it now...3 weeks later...."slaps forehead".

If that was the problem, how long should it take now??

Could you please explain this further. Theses "tricks", who applies them to what? I didnt add any "accellerator programs" to anything. Are you saying you have seen programs do this?

The files that are on this host are movie galleries, I got the movies clips from a sponsor.

Whats probably happening is that your old host hasnt removed your domain names off thier dns servers. I would have network solutions temporaly manage your dns entries until you can work this out.

If you updated your nameservers for the domain to Oxeo a while ago then the only remaining issue is DNS cache which is affected by TTL, you should also inform them to delete your domains out of their nameservers but that wont affect the current problem. The TTLs that were active just before the switch is what other nameservers will have cached for your domain, until they time out there isn't much you can do, although its odd that this situation has been going on for such a long period of time. We keep all of our TTLs on the low side to allow for quick DNS updates and to avoid caching issues.

Run a DNS report (dnsreport.com) and see who what and where the problem is . . .

FYI:

It turns out, the problem WAS due to the fact that my "old" host had not deleted my site. They deleted it the day I satarted this tread, and finally today the dns fully seteled. Everyone is happy now.
